Allen Webster: Cut loose by Washington
The Nationals released Webster on Monday, Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic reports.
Webster, who appeared in 12 games out of the Cubs bullpen in 2019, joined Washington on a minor-league deal in late February and was expected to begin the season at Double-A Harrisburg. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic putting the 2020 minor-league season in jeopardy, the Nationals have decided to cut salary last week by releasing Webster and 39 other minor-league players. The 30-year-old is now free to join another organization either in MLB or abroad.

Cubs' Allen Webster: Outrighted to Triple-A
Webster (arm) was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa on Monday.
Webster threw 11 innings for the Cubs early in the season, allowing six earned runs, before going down with a nerve issue in his right arm in mid-May. He never returned to the big leagues, though he did pitch six rehab innings over the final three months of the season, which would seem to bode well for his availability heading into the 2020 campaign.

Cubs' Allen Webster: Resumes rehab assignment
Webster (arm) restarted his rehab assignment at Double-A Tennessee last week, making two appearances for the affiliate and giving up four runs on three hits and a walk over 1.2 innings.
Webster has been stuck on the Cubs' injured list since May with the arm injury, but began a minor-league rehab assignment in early July before being shut down approximately two weeks later following a setback. The right-hander resumed pitching a month later, but he may have suffered another setback while pitching for Tennessee, as his last appearance came Aug. 19. He'll probably need to return to minor-league action within the next few days to have a realistic shot at rejoining the Cubs as a September callup.

Webster (arm) will continue his rehab assignment at Double-A Tennessee, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Webster made two appearances with the Cubs' rookie-league affiliate over the last week but now makes his way to Double-A. The 29-year-old landed on the injured list in early May with radial nerve inflammation in his right arm and will be eligible to be activated off the 60-day injured list after the All-Star break.

Webster recorded a 4.91 ERA in 11 innings before going down with radial nerve inflammation in mid-May. The injury is evidently severe enough for him to miss at least two months, pushing his return to mid-July at the earliest. He'll make way on the 40-man roster for Craig Kimbrel, who officially joined the Cubs on Friday.

It's not immediately clear how much time Webster will miss, but he will not pitch again until at least sometime late this month. Xavier Cedeno was activated from the injured list to take Webster's spot in the Cubs' bullpen.

Webster got Nick Ahmed to fly out to end the 15th inning, needing just two pitches to record his first career save. He was the ninth pitcher used by the Cubs, and he won't be seeing many save opportunities down the road.

Carl Edwards Jr. was sent down in a corresponding move after a ghastly 32.40 ERA in just 1.2 innings of work. Formerly a starting pitcher, Webster is expected to provide bullpen depth for the Cubs. The reliever has 123.1 innings of major-league experience across four seasons, most recently throwing three innings for the Cubs last year during his first stint in the big leagues since 2015, but he could find himself back in the minors if and when Edwards corrects his mechanics.

Webster lasted played in the majors in 2015. The 28-year-old owns a 6.13 ERA in 120.1 innings over parts of three seasons. His strikeout rate (13.9 percent) and walk rate (12.1 percent) are both poor. He spent the 2016 season in Korea and the 2017 season at Triple-A Round Rock with high ERAs at both stops (5.70 and 6.79, respectively). It's unlikely that he'll be anything more than minor-league filler for the Cubs.
