Coleman agreed to a minor-league deal with the Padres on Thursday which included an invite to spring training.
Coleman spent the 2017 season split between the majors and Triple-A El Paso, but was only a fixture on the big-league team for six weeks in the summer. During 27 appearances with San Diego, he slashed .227/.268/.455 with four home runs and nine RBI. Looking ahead, Coleman could serve in a similar role for this upcoming campaign since the Padres lack depth at the shortstop position, but he shouldn't register on the fantasy radar.

Coleman was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
Coleman will head to El Paso after passing through waivers untouched. The 30-year-old is considered one of the Padres' better defensive infielders, but his struggles at the plate (.227/.268/.455 with a 46.5 percent strikeout rate) weren't enough for the Padres to keep him on the 40-man roster. He'll continue to serve as organizational infield depth moving forward.

Padres' Dusty Coleman: Optioned to Triple-A
Coleman was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
He will be back up when rosters expand in September, but the Padres needed immediate bullpen help, so Miguel Diaz was activated from the 60-day DL. Once he is recalled, Coleman should operate as a reserve middle infielder. He hit .227/.268/.455 with four home runs, one steal and an absurd 46.5 percent strikeout rate prior to his demotion, although he is considered one of the team's best defensive infielders.

Padres' Dusty Coleman: Sits for second straight game
Coleman is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Giants.
Coleman will sit out for the second consecutive day with Yangervis Solarte picking up the start at shortstop. Since manager Andy Green likes deploying the versatile Solarte at multiple spots around on the diamond, Coleman should still be in store for a few starts per week, but it looks as though he'll be pushed out of the lineup more often than the rest of the Padres' regular infield options.

Coleman started and went 1-for-3 with a solo home run -- his fourth of the season -- in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Nationals.
Coleman saw some run as the Padres' everyday shortstop earlier this month, but he has started just two of the club's last seven games after Yangervis Solarte usurped him on the depth chart. The 30-year-old rookie is slugging .560 with seven extra-base hits in 53 plate appearances this season, but he has also struck out 24 times without drawing a walk in that span. Barring an injury to one of the Friars' starting infielders, Coleman will continue serving a backup role going forward.

Yangervis Solarte has largely been deployed in a utility role across a number of different positions since being activated from the disabled list July 30, but it looks like he may have overtaken Coleman as the primary option at shortstop. With Coleman stuck in a 1-for-11 slump at the dish that has dropped his on-base percentage below .300 for the season, manager Andy Green will hand Solarte his second straight start at shortstop while Coleman hits the bench.

Coleman went 3-for-4 with a double, a two-run homer and a steal against the Pirates on Saturday.
Coleman's third bomb of the campaign gave the Pirates a pair of insurance runs in the ninth inning of a road victory. He's only seen at-bats in seven of the 11 games that he's been with the Padres, but otherwise, he's posting an exceptional .333 batting average along with an unsustainable .857 slugging percentage. Fantasy managers who can get him in daily lineups should ride him while he's hot.

The Padres have been looking for a replacement at shortstop while Erick Aybar (foot) remains sidelined indefinitely, and for the time being, it appears manager Andy Green has settled on Coleman as his primary option at the position. As a 30-year-old career minor leaguer who had maintained a .280 on-base percentage at Triple-A El Paso prior to his July 24 promotion, Coleman seems highly unlikely to hold down a starting role for the final two months of the season. In fact, as soon as he starts slumping at the plate, Coleman could find himself pushed off the 40-man roster.
