Rangers' Eric Surkamp: Placed on release waivers Thursday
Surkamp was placed on release waivers Thursday and his contract will be sold to the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean League.
The former Oakland Athletic was recently claimed by the Rangers on June 29 after being DFA'd. He posted a 6.98 ERA across nine starts with Oakland and never got onto the field with the Rangers. His placement on release waivers opens a spot on the Rangers' 40-man roster.

Rangers' Eric Surkamp: Claimed by Rangers
Surkamp was claimed by the Rangers on Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports.
He was designated for assignment by the Athletics earlier in the week for obvious reasons after posting a 6.98 ERA in nine starts. The Rangers are about as desperate as any team for immediate starting pitching depth, given their recent run of injuries, but it's hard to envision Surkamp turning into a useful fantasy option anytime soon.

Surkamp was optioned last week, and with the Athletics claiming Nick Tepesch off waivers, his roster spot was needed. He posted a brutal 6.98 ERA in nine starts for Oakland and has a fastball that sits in the high 80s, so there's a decent chance he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Surkamp has endured a string of poor outings of late, most recently allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits across only 3.2 innings Saturday. Now 0-5 on the season, he'll head down to Triple-A as the A's bring up Dillon Overton from Nashville to start Saturday's game.

Athletics' Eric Surkamp: Struggles through another outing Friday
Surkamp has another poor outing on Friday night allowing five hits, four runs (only two earned) and two walks over only 3.2 innings.
The outing actually lowered Surkamp's ERA under 7.00 for the season to go along with his brutal 1.97 WHIP. Surkamp has managed to make nine starts for the A's due to the extreme number of injuries in the rotation, but has done to make the A's want to keep him in the role and should be the first starter pushed out of the rotation when Sean Manaea and/or Rich Hill return.

Athletics' Eric Surkamp: Named Friday's starter
Surkamp will start Friday against the Angels, Joe Stiglich of CSN California reports.
The lefty has been tabbed as the starter for Game 2 of the Angels series but will be on normal rest thanks to Monday's team off day. Surkamp tossed six innings of two-run ball against the Angels in his last start -- his first quality start in eight turns season -- but didn't get any run support and thus fell to 0-5 on the year. He has struck out one more batter (20) than he's walked (19) in 35 innings with the A's.

Athletics' Eric Surkamp: Tosses first quality start of season Sunday
Surkamp (0-5) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings to take the loss Sunday against the Angels.
Although he had a very solid outing, Surkamp was up against Jered Weaver, who threw a shutout, keeping the lefty from picking up his first win of the season. Not only was this his first quality start of the year, but also the first time he completed six innings in any of his eight starts. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Angels.

Sukramp was brutal on Tuesday night, allowing seven earned runs over only 2.1 innings, raising his ERA to 8.07.
Surkamp has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this season, but seems to find a way back to starting games for he A's due to their multitude of injuries. Along with his bloated ERA, Surkamp also features an ugly 15:17 strikeout to walk ratio over his 29 innings. The A's will likely search for another option to start in five days, but if they cannot find one, Surkamp would take the mound Sunday against the Angels.

Surkamp was recalled from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday.
Surkamp was penciled in to draw the start against the Rangers on Tuesday, so the move doesn't come as much of a surprise. With Rich Hill (groin) and Sean Manaea (arm) on the disabled list, Surkamp could stick around in the major league rotation for the foreseeable future. The lefty has struggled to the tune of a 6.41 ERA in six starts with the big league club this season, but he's been better in the minors with a 3.07 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in five starts at the Triple-A level.

Surkamp will be recalled from Triple-A Nashville to start Tuesday's game against the Rangers, John Shea of The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
With the Athletics placing Rich Hill (groin) on the DL and sending Jesse Hahn to Triple-A last week, Surkamp will claim one of the open spots in the rotation, at least temporarily. Surkamp has been lit up to the tune of a 6.41 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over his previous six starts with the A's this season, so it will be difficult to use him with much confidence Tuesday, especially in a matchup against a powerful Rangers attack.

Surkamp was called recalled from Nashville on Tuesday to start against the Twins and gave up three runs on eight hits during 4.2 innings on the mound. The 28-year-old failed to impress and has posted a 6.41 ERA while allowing opposing batters to hit .322 against him in his time with the A's this season. Surkamp hasn't been able to last longer than six innings in all five of his starts this season, but could receive a call-up later this summer.

Surkamp pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two in Tuesday's game against the Twins. He did not factor in the decision.
Surkamp was recalled from Triple-A Nashville (he was sent down May 16 after a poor start), but he didn't make much of a case to stick around. The Minnesota offense wasn't fooled by the lefty, as he only induced three swinging strikes. Through 26.7 innings with the A's, Surkamp has an unsightly 6.41 ERA and 1.95 WHIP.

Surkamp has struggled in the majors this season, posting a 6.55 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over his first five starts. Luckily for him, the Twins aren't the toughest hitters; they have a team batting average of .238, which ranks 22nd, and also 444 strikeouts, which is seventh most in the league.

Athletics' Eric Surkamp: Can't finish three innings in loss to Red Sox
Surkamp (0-3) lasted just 2.2 innings Wednesday against Boston, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three in a 13-3 loss.
It seems clear at this point that Surkamp -- now with his fourth MLB organization despite only having 48 career appearances to his name -- is not an MLB-caliber starter, and maybe not an MLB-caliber pitcher at all. He's been blown up for 16 runs in only 22 innings spanning five starts and has more walks (14) than strikeouts (12). With other The clock is ticking on his time in the rotation with Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) close to returning and Jesse Hahn a candidate to be recalled.
