After hitting under .200 at both the Triple-A and major-league levels last season, it seemed like an uphill battle for Hanson to secure an Opening Day roster spot with Seattle. With minor-league baseball likely canceled for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hanson may not have an opportunity to play baseball in a major-league organization this year, barring a late addition to another squad.

Mariners' Alen Hanson: Invited to big-league camp
Hanson signed with the Mariners as a non-roster invitee Tuesday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Hanson played 18 games with the Blue Jays in 2019 before being released in August, hitting .163/.229/.163 with five runs scored and four RBI in 48 plate appearances. The 27-year-old second baseman will join his fifth major-league team and head to spring training to work with Seattle's coaching staff before likely returning to the minors to begin the year.

Hanson hasn't been able to find his stroke at the plate in 2019, slashing .187/.232/.271 with three homers and 18 RBI through 48 games with Triple-A Buffalo. He'll head to the open market as a result of his poor performance.

Hanson looked to be in line for more work in the infield following Lourdes Gurriel's recent demotion to Triple-A Buffalo, but it's instead been callup Eric Sogard who has been the main beneficiary. Sogard will draw a third consecutive start as the Blue Jays' leadoff man while Hanson remains on the bench for a second consecutive game. The switch-hitting Hanson may still be viewed as a short-side platoon mate for Sogard, who bats from the left side.

Blue Jays' Alen Hanson: Dealt to Toronto
The Giants traded Hanson along with pitchers Derek Law and Juan De Paula to the Blue Jays on Tuesday in exchange for outfielder Kevin Pillar.
Hanson doesn't have any minor-league options remaining, so he'll presumably take Pillar's spot on the 40-man and active rosters in Toronto after the Giants had designated him for assignment prior to Opening Day. The 26-year-old managed only a .274 on-base average across 310 plate appearances with San Francisco in 2018, but offered some nice versatility as a switch-hitter who can play multiple spots in the infield and outfield. He'll likely be ticketed for a bench role with the Blue Jays.

Hanson will not be on the Giants' Opening Day roster, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Hanson was battling for a utility role this spring but unfortunately did little to help himself with a .176/.236/.353 slash line and 20 strikeouts in 51 at-bats. The 26-year-old is out of minor-league options, so he'll have to first go unclaimed off waivers before reporting to the Giants' Triple-A affiliate in San Francisco.

Hanson was a revelation for San Francisco last season when he slashed .252/.274/.425 with eight homers and seven steals over 294 at-bats while playing all over the infield and outfield. The 25-year-old will have to prove himself again during spring training in order to win a backup utility role over several other options the Giants brought in to camp.

This marks the second game in a row Hanson will watch from the bench. This comes as a bit of a surprise, as right-hander Yovani Gallardo is taking the hill for Texas. Perhaps Hanson's recent cold streak at the plate is to blame (two hits in his last 12 at-bats), but either way, it's expected that his playing time will pick up a bit if Andrew McCutchen is moved ahead of the trade waiver deadline.
