Jose Torres: Released by Padres
Torres was cut loose by San Diego on Wednesday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Torres was designated for assignment and outrighted from the club's roster earlier in the week, and will now hit the free-agent market after being released by the organization. The 25-year-old was not a member of the Padres' active roster at any point during the 2018 season due to a violation of the league's domestic violence policy, which eventually led to a season-ending suspension in June. Across 62 relief appearances with the team in 2017, he logged a 4.21 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 63 strikeouts in 68.1 innings.

Padres' Jose Torres: Outrighted from 40-man roster

Torres was suspended for the remainder of the 2018 season for violating the league's domestic violence policy, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.
It's officially a 100-game suspension for Torres (retroactive to June 5), which he is not appealing. The 24-year-old has been on the restricted list since February due to the domestic violence incident that took place in December, and results in him sitting out the entirety of the 2018 season.

Padres' Jose Torres: Domestic incident behind placement on restricted list
Torres was placed on the restricted list as a result of a domestic violence-related incident in December, Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego reports.
Besides the alleged domestic issues, the left-hander was also found to be in prohibited possession of a deadly weapon and drugs. Torres pleaded not guilty to initial charges, but he still has another pretrial conference scheduled for Feb. 20. More information should come forth at that time. Major League Baseball and the MLBPA will also investigate the situation following the court proceedings, which could lead to a suspension of some sort for Torres.

Torres was placed on the restricted list Monday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
No other details emerged regarding the reason behind this designation, but it ultimately will keep him from competing for an Opening Day roster spot. The southpaw produced a 4.21 ERA and a 63:16 K:BB in 68.1 innings last season, and he seemed to be trending upward prior to this issue. With Torres out of the picture for now, Buddy Baumann and Kyle McGrath will jockey to be the main lefty behind closer Brad Hand.

Torres owns a subpar 4.21 ERA on the year, but he has come on strong in the second half, providing a 1.96 ERA and 5.0 K/BB ratio in 17 appearances since Aug. 6. More importantly, he has given up just one home run during that period after posting an ugly 2.2 HR/9 over his previous 45 outings. The five wins are nice, but those should be disregarded, as chasing wins from a reliever is not a fruitful venture. The 23-year-old has held his own as a rookie, posting a 4.14 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 4.3 K/BB over 37 innings, but those numbers aren't good enough for use in fantasy as a middle reliever.

Padres' Jose Torres: No lingering effects from liner taken off wrist
Torres has pitched 13.1 innings since taking a line drive off his wrist, striking out 11 and giving up five runs, one of which was unearned.
Torres has shown no signs of lingering problems from the line drive on his wrist May 10, posting a 1.20 WHIP and 2.70 ERA since then. The WHIP is actually an increase from the 0.93 he had before the injury, but that number should be ignored as the attention goes to the ERA drop from the 5.40 he was originally posting. On the season, his numbers now stand at a WHIP of 1.06 and ERA of 4.13, respectable stats for a pitcher who only had three big-league innings under his belt coming into the season.

A line drive hit Torres on the wrist earlier in the week, but the southpaw was able to avoid a DL stint and returned to action Friday.
