Rickie Weeks: Cut loose by Tampa Bay
Weeks was activated from the 10-day disabled list and released by the Rays on Monday.
The veteran had been out with a shoulder impingement since early June, and although he was nearly ready to return from the DL, the Rays opted to cut ties with him in order to make room for Sergio Romo on the active roster. Weeks' positional versatility and history of decent power production could create some intrigue on the open market, although potential suitors could also be deterred by the .216 batting average he produced in the majors this season.

Rays' Rickie Weeks: Hits safely in first rehab outing
Weeks (shoulder, hand) went 1-for-3 with a run and two strikeouts for Triple-A Durham against Indianapolis on Wednesday.
It was the first game of what will likely be a one-week rehab for Weeks, who played first base and hit second. The veteran was sidelined for over a month, but a week's worth of at-bats should be sufficient to help him shake the majority of the rust off.

Rays' Rickie Weeks: To begin rehab assignment Wednesday
Weeks (shoulder, hand) will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Weeks has been on the disabled list since June 9, but is finally ready to attack the final hurdle in his rehab program. If his assignment goes off without a hitch, he'll likely rejoin the Rays in the next week or so.

Rays' Rickie Weeks: Arrives in Durham on Monday
Weeks (shoulder, hand) arrived at Triple-A Durham on Monday and could play in his first rehab game Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The veteran began working out upon his arrival in anticipation of his rehab assignment, which is likely to last the remainder of this week at a minimum. After a particularly sluggish start to the season that saw his average dip as low as .163 on May 5, Weeks had started to show some life offensively, slashing .271/.327/.396 in 52 plate appearances across 17 games prior to his injury.

Rays' Rickie Weeks: Slated for minor-league rehab next week
Weeks (shoulder, hand) is expected to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham next week, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
It appears the veteran is finally ready to return to game action after having been sidelined since June 9. Given the amount of time he's been out, Weeks is likely to play multiple games with the Bulls before a return to the major-league club.

The veteran has been sidelined for nearly a full month and was slashing .216/.321/.340 before his right shoulder impingement necessitated the move to the disabled list. Weeks started 12 games at first base and 17 at designated hitter to open the season, and he'd presumably return to both roles in some capacity upon activation.

It's unclear when the ailment cropped up for Weeks, but he'll need some time off to allow things to get right. A timetable for his return should start to materialize once the Rays update his status further. In a corresponding roster move, Taylor Featherston was acquired from the Phillies via trade.

Weeks went 2-for-2 with a walk in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Twins.
Weeks' bat has started to come alive in May following a miserable April in which he hit just .179. The veteran now has five multi-hit efforts during the month, upping his season average 54 points to .233 in the process. The 34-year-old's designated hitter role appears secure at present, and he's also able to fill in at first base when called upon.

Weeks will start at designated hitter and bat fifth in the order Sunday against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Weeks' hot hitting in addition to the Rays running into opposing southpaws of late will result in the veteran earning his sixth straight start. In the preceding five games, Weeks has enjoyed his best stretch of the season, during which he's gone 6-for-21 with three extra-base hits. However, Weeks has still struck out in 40.9 percent of his plate appearances during that span, which will make it difficult for his batting average to climb much higher above the Mendoza Line.

Rays' Rickie Weeks: Keeps on hitting Friday
Weeks went 2-for-4 with a double and a run in Friday's 5-4 win over the Red Sox.
The 34-year-old seems to be awakening from his season-long offensive slumber, as he's now posted multi-hit efforts in three of his last four games. Weeks hit just .179 over 47 plate appearances in April, but has raised his average to .212 with the aforementioned stretch of hitting.

Weeks went 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Wednesday's 12-1 rout of the Royals.
He's had a slow start to the season, slashing .203/.338/.373 through 22 games, but Weeks has now posted back-to-back two-hit games. With Logan Morrison and Corey Dickerson both hitting well and Colby Rasmus back in the fold, though, playing time may be hard for Weeks to come by.

The Rays are short on healthy outfielders with Colby Rasmus (groin) and Mallex Smith (hamstring) on the disabled list, so Corey Dickerson will slot into left field Monday, opening up the DH spot for Weeks. After missing two games with some shoulder discomfort, Weeks will dig back in Saturday and bat cleanup against lefty Chris Sale. The fact that Weeks is back in the lineup is certainly an encouraging sign, but there's no word yet on when he'll be able to get back to playing first base.

Rays' Rickie Weeks: Expects to avoid DL
Weeks (shoulder) is out of the lineup Thursday, the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin reports.
He likely wouldn't have gotten the start even if he were healthy, as the Rays are facing righty Luis Severino. Logan Morrison is starting at first base and hitting sixth. Weeks suffered a bone bruise on his shoulder and also experienced neck soreness after the collision with Brett Gardner at first base Wednesday. He does not expect to need a DL stint, according to SB Nation's Mark A. Suleymanov, and should be considered day-to-day. The next lefty the Rays face will be Chris Sale in Boston on Saturday, so that would likely be the soonest Weeks could return.

Rays' Rickie Weeks: Hits first homer of season Wednesday before exit
Weeks (shoulder) went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run before exiting Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Yankees due to a collision at first base.
Weeks hit out of the cleanup spot and opened the scoring on the day in the first inning with a 391-foot two-run shot to left off Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery. It was Weeks' first homer of the season and the veteran's third hit overall. The 34-year-old has proven to be a positive addition throughout spring and in the early going of the regular season, so reports that he'll apparently avoid the disabled list with the bone bruise he suffered in the collision is certainly welcome news.
