  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Designated for assignment

Qualls was designated for assignment prior to Friday's game.

The reliever returned from a back injury Monday, and earned two appearances on the mound against the Giants this past week. During his time on the bump, Qualls allowed two earned runs off four hits while just recording three outs, bloating his ERA to 5.40 for the season. The 38-year-old has been in the majors since 2005, and has been a part of the Rockies organization for the last year and a half.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Activated from DL

Qualls (back) was activated from the disabled list Monday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

As expected, Qualls is back in the Rockies' bullpen after the minimum stay on the disabled list. The 38-year-old owns a 4.60 ERA and 9:5 K:BB through 15.2 innings of relief this season.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Expects to be activated when ready

Qualls (back) got through a 25-pitch bullpen session Wednesday with no issues, MLB.com reports.

The veteran right-hander landed on the DL earlier in the week due to back spasms, though he appears to be progressing well. Qualls, who said he felt normal during Wednesday's bullpen, believes he'll be ready to return from the disabled list when first eligible next week.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Hits DL with back spasms

Qualls was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with lower back spasms, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

This is the first report of Qualls being plagued by back discomfort. This injury may be attributable to his past two shaky relief outings in which he allowed two earned runs over his previous 1.2 innings of work. Carlos Estevez has been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Longtime veteran using defense to his advantage

Qualls has an ERA of 4.11 and WHIP of 1.11 in 15.1 innings out of the bullpen this season for Colorado.

It's been a pleasant surprise of a season for the 38-year-old, who is putting together his best body of work since 2014 when he had an ERA of 3.33 and WHIP of 1.15. He's only struck out nine, but his defense is cleaning up the contact he is allowing and holding runners to a .208 average on balls put in play. His walk rate of 2.9 per nine innings is slightly higher than his career average, but overall there isn't much to complain about with a pitcher as old as he is.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Touched up over weekend

Qualls served up three runs in just one-third of an inning Saturday, raising his ERA to 5.19.

The veteran reliever had been a major contributor in the bullpen's success this season, as his ERA sat at a stellar 2.16 prior to the debacle. He's not going to get too many high-leverage innings with many other hurlers ahead of him in the pecking order, but six of his nine outings have been scoreless, so Qualls is at least making the most of his opportunities.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Activated from DL

Qualls (forearm) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Qualls opened the season on the DL due to the forearm strain, but after completing a six-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque, the Rockies felt comfortable signing off on his return to the big club. He's expected to work in the middle innings for the Rockies, but doesn't figure to be deployed as one of the primary setup men to closer Greg Holland.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Begins rehab assignment Tuesday

Qualls (forearm) pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout Tuesday night with Triple-A Albuquerque.

Along with the strikeout, another positive sign from the appearance was that eight of the right-hander's 13 pitches went for strikes. It's unclear whether the Rockies want Qualls to appear in another minor league game prior to returning to the big-league bullpen, but things should become clearer in the coming days. Regardless of the timeline, Qualls appears to be on the verge of returning to action.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Ready for rehab assignment

Qualls (forearm) threw a simulated game Saturday and is expected to begin a rehab assignment in the next couple days, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports.

Back with the team as of Saturday, the veteran reliever faced teammates Stephen Cardullo, Christhian Adames and Alexi Amarista in the outing. Manager Bud Black liked what he saw out of Qualls, commenting that he "looks as though his stuff was Chad Qualls-like. Good sinker, hard slider and a change." If Black's read is correct, it seems like the right-hander could be back with the Colorado bullpen as soon as Friday as long as his impending rehab assignment goes without a hitch.

  • Rockies' Chad Qualls: Bullpen session on tap for Saturday

Qualls (forearm) is expected to rejoin the Rockies and throw another bullpen session Saturday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

The veteran reliever tossed a bullpen session Wednesday back in Arizona, and it seems like he's on track to return to game action soon. If all goes well following Saturday's outing, Qualls is expected to head on a rehab assignment shortly thereafter, after which a firmer timetable for his return should come out.
