Corner infielder Casey McGehee has been acquired by the Yankees from the Pirates in exchange for relief pitcher Chad Qualls, the Pirates announced Tuesday.

McGehee provides needed corner infield depth with third baseman Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list and first baseman Mark Teixeira dealing a wrist injury (though his malady doesn't appear serious).

The Pirates, on the other hand, can use Garrett Jones -- after getting Travis Snider to play right field -- or newly-acquired Gaby Sanchez at first base. Thus, McGehee was a bit expendable.

McGehee, 29, is hitting .230/.297/.377 with eight homers, 35 RBI and 13 doubles in 293 plate appearances this season for the Pirates. McGehee was very good for the Brewers in 2009 and 2010. He had 23 homers and 104 RBI in 2010 as the Brewers' regular third baseman, but he was awful in 2011 and hasn't been much better this season.

Qualls, 33, has now fallen out of favor with both the Phillies and Yankees this season. In all, he has a 4.89 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and five blown saves. The Pirates will be Qualls' seventh big-league club.
