Reds' Alfredo Simon: Moved to 60-day disabled list
Simon (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Monday.
The move was procedural to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Matt Magill from Triple-A Louisville. Simon's 2016 campaign has come to an end; the veteran will use the offseason to rehab and prove he's still worth a look as he enters free agency.

Reds' Alfredo Simon: Set to undergo surgery on shoulder
Simon will require season-ending surgery to address his ailing shoulder, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Simon's miserable season will end on an unfortunate note, as the surgery could inhibit his preparation for spring training. Considering he's 35 years old and coming off a major arm injury and a season in which he posted a 9.36 ERA over 58.2 innings, Simon, a soon-to-be free agent, may have to wait awhile before landing a contract this winter.

Reds' Alfredo Simon: To miss rest of season
Simon aggravated his shoulder injury and will miss the remainder of the season, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Simon has played just 15 games for the big club this season, over which he's posted a 9.36 ERA and 2.05 WHIP. Home runs also gave him trouble this season as he allowed 15 over just 58.2 innings, giving him a 2.3 HR/9.

Reds' Alfredo Simon: Activated from DL
Simon (shoulder) was activated from the DL on Monday.
Simon had been on the disabled list since June 22, but is finally ready to return to action. While on his rehab assignment, Simon allowed eight runs over 15 innings, good for a 4.80 ERA. He hasn't had much luck in with the big club this season either, as he owns a 9.45 ERA and 2.06 WHIP after pitching 53.1 innings.

Simon probably will work in long relief, though a spot start or two could still come if/when the Reds shut down Brandon Finnegan.

Simon (shoulder) is beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Sunday night.
It's unclear what role Simon will have upon his return, but the Reds probably will be looking to manage the innings of Brandon Finnegan and Cody Reed soon, among others. So it's not out of the question that Simon will get a few more starts before the end of the season.

Simon (shoulder) has been throwing bullpen sessions while the Reds were traveling the last week, but could throw live batting practice sessions this week, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Simon doesn't really have a spot to return to, at least until an injury occurs or rosters expand in September. The Reds aren't in a hurry to bring him back.

Simon has been absolutely terrible this season for the Reds, going 2-7 with a 9.45 ERA and 2.06 WHIP. Now he will hit the disabled list and focus on rehabbing his shoulder. However, if the 35-year-old can't improve upon his return, his days with the Reds may be numbered.

Simon (shoulder) is not with the Reds for their two-game series in Texas, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Simon instead went to Cincinnati to get further examinations. The team returns home Thursday, but there's a good chance that Simon will go on the DL on Wednesday to make room for the team to activate Michael Lorenzen.

Reds' Alfredo Simon: Moved to bullpen
Simon has been moved to the Cincinnati bullpen, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Simon had been pencilled in as Monday's starter, but manager Bryan Price will instead turn to the 25-year-old Daniel Wright to get the nod in that contest. This move isn't really all that surprising, as Simon's 9.11 ERA (7.18 FIP) was among the highest of all qualified starters, as he certainly didn't provide much cause for optimism during Wednesday's six-run outing against the Cardinals. The Reds' bullpen is one of the worst in the majors, but one has to question if adding Simon there is even a plus at this point.

Reds' Alfredo Simon: Deals another uninspiring performance Wednesday
Simon (2-6) was crushed by the Cardinals in Wednesday's loss. He pitched five innings, allowing six runs, seven hits and five walks while striking out three.
The ninth-year veteran's nightmare season continued as he failed to make it past the fifth inning for the ninth time in 12 starts. After winning 28 games over the past two seasons, Simon is performing at a level worthy of being replaced in the rotation. He's walking batters and giving up home runs at career-high rates -- a deadly combination for a pitcher. Two consecutive winning seasons shouldn't be enough to encourage owners that Simon will turn it around any time soon. At this point, there are very few leagues in which he holds value.
