Conor McGregor's two-division title run has come to an abrupt end.

With UFC 206 in need of a new main event after an injury to Daniel Cormier forced him out of action, UFC elevated its battle between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis to an interim featherweight title fight, according to MMAFighting.com.

UFC later announced the decision.

That means that the man who conquered the featherweight division with a 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo in December 2015 will never get the chance to defend the crown.

McGregor topped Aldo before jumping up two weightclasses for two showdowns with Nate Diaz in 2016. Then, at UFC 205, McGregor crushed Eddie Alvarez to take the lightweight crown and become the first simultaneous champion in company history.

Now, McGregor will be forced to give up the featherweight crown with Aldo, who beat Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 for the original interim title, now elevated to 145-pound champion.

Holloway has won his last nine fights with his last loss coming against none other than McGregor in 2013. Pettis is on his second fight at 145 pounds after losing three straight at 155. He is coming off a submission victory over Charles Oliveira in August.
