Klay Thompson won't sacrifice his role with Warriors, and Kevin Durant agrees

With Kevin Durant joining the Golden State Warriors, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and even Stephen Curry will have to make some adjustments to their individual games. Thompson has already made it clear that he is willing to adjust and envisions himself having a role similar to the one Manu Ginobili has had for years with the San Antonio Spurs.

But Thompson clarified his role on the team in a conversation with The Vertical's Shams Charania, saying he is still going to get buckets despite Durant being there:

"I feel kind of disrespected that people keep using the term sacrifice to describe me and describe us," Thompson told The Vertical. "We all want to see each other do well. But I'm not sacrificing [expletive], because my game isn't changing. I'm still going to try to get buckets, hit shots, come off screens. I want to win and have a fun time every game we play.

Thompson is likely right. He won't have to truly sacrifice his own game now that Durant is there, since he will still be a knockdown shooter and excellent defender. He may get less shot opportunities but that shouldn't cause Thompson to totally overhaul his game. Plus, Durant actually agrees with Thompson and isn't worried about there only being only one ball, and says the Warriors will make the necessary game-by-game adjustments. From Charania:

"We want Klay to stay Klay," Durant told The Vertical. "We don't want him to change. The games dictate where the shots come from. I may shoot 12 shots one night; Klay may shoot eight or nine shots one night, and Steph may shoot 25 shots one night. And it could be a different flow another night."

The Warriors are made up of very high basketball IQ players and although there will likely be some speed bumps in the road from time to time, Golden State should be able to figure things out. After all, they added Durant, one of the best players in the league and a player that will definitely help them be an even stronger team. Concessions will have to be made yet Thompson and the rest of Golden State's stars won't become totally different players now that Durant is on the Warriors.
