For the first time, the NBA will announce all of its major awards during a televised awards show after the Finals and the 2017 draft, the league announced on Tuesday. Scheduled for June 26, the NBA Awards Show will take place in New York and air on TNT.

From the press release:

The star-studded event will recognize NBA players, teams, coaches and executives for their accomplishments and performances from the 2016-17 NBA season. The show will feature the announcements of the Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, Kia NBA Sixth Man Award, Kia NBA Most Improved Player and Coach of the Year.

While in previous years these awards were announced separately throughout the postseason, this marks the first time that all recipients will be honored on the same night. Additional awards will be announced at a later date as well as the venue, the host and the list of presenters.

This was first announced back in 2014, right after the league announced its new television rights deal, which came into effect this season. We now know more about it -- the winners apparently won't be announced during the playoffs, and there will be new awards.

It's not clear that this is really necessary, but it will surely turn out better than the National Basketball Players Association's ill-fated Players' Awards. Also, there's the possibility of extreme awkwardness because of the timing. Last year, for example, Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr would have had to accept their MVP and Coach of the Year trophies about a week after losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.
