Since the Panthers beat the Dolphins in both teams' second exhibition game last Friday, Carolina receiver Steve Smith only has practiced once, and on Wednesday, Smith was absent so he could see a doctor about the infection in his left foot, the Charlotte Observer reported.

This shouldn't be a major cause for concern, and it doesn't figure to affect Smith's ability to play in Carolina's season-opener vs. the Buccaneers.

Smith will have his foot treated with antibiotics, and his status for the Panthers preseason game vs. the Jets this Sunday is up in the air -- team trainers want to wait for the swelling to subside before making a decision.

Smith was seen by reporters later Wednesday on crutches.
