Webb wasn't able to practice at the start of training camp Wednesday after failing his conditioning test and was placed on the non-football injury list.
"The conditioning test measures anaerobic conditioning," coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday. "It measures the ability to recover, to get your heart rate up and recover. Webby is in really good shape in a lot of different ways, I can see it in the way he moves in the weight room, but he's not in the kind of anaerobic shape he needs to be in to come out here and practice."
Webb isn't the first Ravens' veteran to fail the test under coach John Harbaugh. "It's always a big deal," Harbaugh said. "It was a big deal when Jacoby [Jones] didn't pass it. It was a big deal when Haloti [Ngata] didn't pass it. It's always a big deal."
Harbaugh said that, while Webb was in good shape, "it's not the kind of anaerobic shape he needs to be in to come out here in practice. ... He's a little behind that way, certainly. And he's going to have to make up the ground."
His absence last training camp due to a back issue resulted in a slow start to the regular season in which he missed the first two games.
After restructuring his contract with the
Webb recently agreed to a contract restructure that dropped his cap number from $12 million to $9.25 million.
"My goal is to retire a Raven and, while it wasn’t an easy decision, I wanted to put the team first," Webb told The Baltimore Sun. "I wanted to prove myself this year that the Ravens sticking with me was the right decision. The Ravens reached out to my agent, Marc Lillibridge, a few weeks before the scouting combine and they were talking and working hard together to get something done. I'm glad it's done."
Webb, 29, has spent his entire six-year career with the Ravens, posting 301 total tackles, two sacks, 71 passes defensed, 11 interceptions and two forced fumbles.
Webb has started 27 games in the last two seasons. He has totaled 301 total tackles, two sacks, 71 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and 11 interceptions in six years in the NFL.
