Ryan Mathews looks good until he fumbles
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Ryan Mathews got the first carry for the Chargers and ended up with five total in their preseason debut vs. Dallas on Thursday. Accumulating 19 yards on the ground, Mathews' worst moment came in the first quarter when a Cowboys defender got his helmet on the football and popped it out when Mathews dove for the end zone. He didn't play again after that mistake, but neither did the Chargers' first-team offense.

Splitting playing time with Danny Woodhead on the Chargers' first drive, Mathews' first three carries were solid gains for 5 to 7 yards each. He didn't show exceptional cuts or burst but was still very effective against a very bad defense.

Chargers coach Mike McCoy told NFL Network that he intends to keep feeding Mathews the ball despite the fumble.

Mathews will play again at the Seahawks on Aug. 15.

Chargers rolling with 'three-headed monster'
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews described the backfield as a "three-headed monster," reports the San Diego Union-Tribune. He'll share the workload with Donald Brown and Danny Woodhead.

The paper still calls Mathews "the workhorse." Woodhead is "the versatile guy who can run and catch," and Brown is "sort of a hybrid of the two." The team also drafted running back Marion Grice.

"There is no such thing as a featured back any more," running backs coach Ollie Wilson said.

Ryan Mathews: I've got to do more
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews wants to be fresh and healthy come the end of the season and the playoffs this year, reports ESPN.

Mathews suffered a sprained ankle against Oakland toward the end of the 2013 season and was ineffective in the playoffs, rushing for a total of 78 yards in two contests against Cincinnati and Denver. Although he played a full 16-game season for the first time in his four-year NFL career, Mathews is focused on being on the field and at his best when the games matter most.

"That’s my expectation this season," Mathews said. "I've got to do more and do better, so I can be there with my guys to be able to help them out as much as I can when we get there again."

This offseason, Mathews did running and agility drills at the beach to strengthen the smaller muscles in his legs and maintain his 220-pound frame.

"I think Ryan is going to have a great year, probably better than last year," Chargers offensive tackle D.J. Fluker said. "He looks faster."

Chargers OC: Ryan Mathews is 'primary workhorse'
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

Despite the offseason signing of Donald Brown, Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich told the team's website that running back Ryan Mathews "is the pounder." Added Reich: "He’s going to be the primary workhorse. He’s our guy."

Mathews ran for a career-high 1,255 yards on 285 carries with six touchdowns last year.
