Williams ran for 87 yards on 18 carries in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs.
Williams took the lion's share of carries in his first bit of work of the 2016 season, just days after being elevated from the practice squad. The third-year player never caught on in New York's running-back carousel after being a fourth-round pick by the Giants, but could be worth holding onto in San Diego. He displayed the same kind of bruising style on Sunday that helped him rush for 2,177 yards as a senior at Boston College in 2013.
The Chargers elevated Williams from the practice squad Tuesday, Adam Caplan of ESPN reports.
Following yet another running back's placement on injured reserve -- Kenneth Farrow (shoulder) -- the Chargers were again in need of a healthy body in the backfield due to the uncertain status of Melvin Gordon (hip/knee). While the team is taking a wait-and-see approach with Gordon, Ronnie Hillman will prepare as the starting RB for Sunday's season finale versus the Chiefs. Williams is thus an insurance policy in the event Gordon is unable to go in Week 17.
Williams was a healthy scratch in each of the Chargers' first two games. His release effectively clears room for the addition of TE Asante Cleveland from the team's practice squad and leaves San Diego with only two healthy running backs behind starter Melvin Gordon.
Williams latched on with the Chargers shortly after he was cut by the Giants during training camp, but he'll open the season fourth on the team's depth chart at running back. The former Boston College star could offer the Chargers some utility in short-yardage situations, but his inability to contribute on special teams might render him inactive most weeks unless another San Diego back succumbs to an injury.
Now in San Diego, Williams will look to mirror what he did as rookie in 2014. His lackluster 2015 season ultimately cast a shadow over his strong rookie campaign, but Williams could have the opportunity to prove his ability backing up Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead.
