| OT Chris Samuels retired on March 4 after 10 seasons and six Pro Bowls because of the heightened risk that another blow to the head such as he received last season at Carolina would combine with his lifelong spinal stenosis to cause permanent injury. "A lot of people have been praying for me to receive a miracle, but they don't realize I received my miracle when I got up off the field at Carolina," said Samuels, who revealed that he was first diagnosed after being carted off the field in high school with paralysis to his upper and lower extremities. Dan Snyder, whose Redskins chose Samuels third overall in the 2000 draft, his first as the owner recalled the Alabama All-American saying, "You'll never regret drafting me." And the Redskins never did as Samuels fought through 12 surgeries while missing just eight games until enduring the final blow in Week 5 last sea son. "We're lucky to have had him play for us," Snyder said. "He's been a team leader. Chris has always been a true gentleman, a class act." Samuels thanked Snyder, his girlfriend, parents, godfather, pastor, agent, numerous teammates -- seven of whom were on hand for his farewell press conference -- and coaches. "I've been preparing for this for a long time so don't you guys feel sorry for me," said Samuels, who said a last medical checkup a few weeks ago made his decision to walk away while stay fully functional off the field final. "I always said after I retired, I wanted to coach and that's my next move. I think my ability to relate to guys will help me out tremendously (and) I just love the game of football. I think I'm meant to do it." Samuels, 32, will launch his coaching career as an intern with the Redskins this spring and summer. Only Chris Hanburger (nine) and Hall of Famers Darrell Green, Ken Houston and Charley Taylor (seven each) made more Pro Bowl for the Redskins than Samuels. (Updated 201034) TSX |
