Head coach John Harbaugh said he is confident Correa (ribs) can win the starting weak-side linebacker job, ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley reports.
The 42nd overall selection in last year's draft, Correa logged just 48 defensive snaps in nine games, mostly contributing on special teams before a rib injury forced him to injured reserve in December. He made his mark in college as a pass rusher, but it seems the Ravens want him to play inside linebacker in their 3-4 defense, replacing early-retiree Zach Orr (neck). Baltimore could also use help at outside linebacker, which would seem to be Correa's more natural fit in the defense. Either way, he's expected to take on a key role as he prepares for his second professional season. He should have a clean bill of health with which to tackle whatever comes his way, as Correa's rib injury likely has cleared up at this point.
Saturday's move to IR officially puts an end to Correa's rookie season. The 2016 second-rounder seldom saw the field on defense this season as he played more than 10 snaps in a game just once while less heralded rookies made significant impacts on that side of the ball. While injuries certainly played a factor in Correa's slow developing rookie season, the fact remains that he'll have his work cut out for him at offseason workouts and in training camp if he wants to lay claim to a larger role in the
Correa (ribs) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Steelers.
After missing the entire week of practice due to a rib issue, Correa was ruled out Friday as expected. His absence will have a slight impact on Baltimore's special teams units, but it's unlikely to change the complexion of the defense.
Correa (ribs) did not participate in Wednesday's practice.
The rookie has battled a litany of injuries this season, including thumb and thigh injuries that have caused him to miss time. He played 17 special teams snaps Sunday but he did not get on the field with the Ravens' defense. His level of participation in practice the remainder of the week will shed light on his availability for Sunday, but even if he does play, he'll likely see the field only on special teams.
Correa (thigh) is active for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
Though Correa was cleared to play after practicing in full the entire week, he'll have a tough time making an impact as a depth linebacker. He's recorded just four stops in six games on the season.
