Gaines (knee) is active for Saturday's third preseason game against the Bears, Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports.
Gaines is coming back from a torn ACL which he suffered Week 3 of the 2015 season. He managed to have a solid week of practice leading up to Saturday and will seemingly be back in action for the Chiefs moving forward.
Gaines has endured a long road to recovery after suffering a torn ACL during Week 3 of the 2015 season, and while he's not yet 100 percent, he's certainly closing in on that mark with hopes of finally seeing preseason action later this week. Given he continues to perform well in practice and avoids any kind of setback, he could earn the starting spot at cornerback opposite Marcus Peters.
When 2015 starter Sean Smith bolted for Oakland, the starting cornerback job opposite Peters went up for grabs. Though lost to an ACL tear last September, Gaines appears to be the frontrunner for the gig. He's been unable to participate in team drills during the majority of the

Taking Gaines' spot on the Chiefs' roster will be fellow cornerback Sean Smith , who is in line to be activated after having completed a three-game suspension to start the season.
Gaines picked up two tackles before departing, giving him a total of six in two games this year. He's off the Individual Defensive Player radar at this point.
