Primarily an outside receiver throughout his career, Nelson spent more time inside last season and averaged an NFL-best 2.75 yards per route run from the slot (min. 130 routes), per Pro Football Focus. While Randall Cobb still figures to man the slot in the team's base three-wide alignment, the Packers will move Nelson around to exploit various mismatches all over the field. The 32-year-old is locked in as the top option in one of the league's most prolific and efficient passing attacks.
Nelson caught both of his targets for 42 yards on the first drive, but was held to just three receptions for 22 yards on his next six targets before getting into the end zone from three yards out late in the third quarter. The veteran wide receiver did well to even be out there after fracturing at least two ribs against the Giants two weeks ago. He should be fully healthy by the start of the 2017 campaign.
Nelson (ribs) is listed as active Sunday at Atlanta.
Likely with a flak jacket in tow to protect his broken ribs, Nelson will take the field two weeks removed from logging an early exit in the wild-card round against the Giants. While his snap count could be capped in order to get the most out of him and fellow injured wide receivers Davante Adams (ankle) and Geronimo Allison (hamstring), Nelson will attempt to strike against a Falcons defense that has allowed 165 yards receiving per game and 19 touchdowns to the position in 17 contests this season.
Nelson (ribs) is expected to play in Sunday's NFC championship game in Atlanta, Ian Rapoport and Stacey Dales of NFL Network report.
After a week in which the Packers were flirting with trotting out a decimated receiving corps, all of Nelson, Davante Adams (ankle), and Geronimo Allison (hamstring) are slated to suit up with the season on the line. Nelson himself will surely be wearing some type of protection over his broken ribs, raising the question of how many snaps he can handle. While any hit could result in an abbreviated affair, he'll aim to connect with Aaron Rodgers against the Falcons' 28th-ranked pass defense.
Nelson (ribs) is expected to be active for Sunday's NFC championship game in Atlanta, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Nelson took the field in a limited capacity both Wednesday and Thursday, before he was estimated as "limited" on the Packers' final injury report of the week. Despite the workload, the few routes he ran and passes corralled occurred without pads, suggesting that he wasn't cleared for contact. Like fellow wideouts Davante Adams (ankle) and Geronimo Allison (hamstring), Nelson remained questionable after Saturday's light session, meaning a cloud remains over the trio's potential to play in the upcoming do-or-die affair. One way or another, Nelson's availability will be confirmed upon the release of the Packers' inactive list at roughly 1:35 PM ET on Sunday, though how many snaps he can handle remains to be seen.
