Edmonton at Detroit

Oilers snap Detroit's 13-game home winning streak

DETROIT -- The Edmonton Oilers spoiled the Detroit Red Wings' party again.

Ryan Smyth scored the only goal of the shootout to give the Oilers a 4-3 win Friday night that snapped Detroit's 13-game home winning streak.

Smyth, Raffi Torres, and Marty Reasoner had goals for Edmonton in regulation and Dwayne Roloson stopped 27 shots for the Oilers, who upset the Red Wings in six games in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs last season.

"It doesn't hurt, playing in the playoffs and having the success that we did," Smyth said. "We had pretty good success this year against them (3-1-0), and we just wanted to carry some momentum."

Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Holmstrom, and Valtteri Filppula scored for the Red Wings, whose winning streak ended one short of tying a franchise record set in 1964-65. Detroit last lost at home on Dec. 12.

"That streak's over with. We don't have to worry about that," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "We can just go out and play."

Nicklas Lidstrom and Mathieu Schneider had two assists apiece, and Dominik Hasek made 23 saves for the Red Wings.

"The way the game was played today, too many mistakes," Hasek said. "That's why we lost the game."

Zetterberg has 14 goals and 27 points in his last 12 games.

On the shootout goal, Smyth made a move on Hasek and shot. Hasek got a piece of the puck, but wound up deflecting it in.

"I was trying to open him up and go 5-hole. He flops a lot and covers down low," Smyth said. "I guess I should have went up high, but I tried to open him up and go backhand to forehand. With the fresh ice, obviously it helped slide it across."

Reasoner poked a loose puck into an empty net 8:24 into the third period to tie the game 3-3.

"(Fernando) Pisani made a great play in the neutral zone to get the puck to me," Reasoner said. " ... He made a great play to get it on the goalie and it was sitting out in the crease there, and I just had to bang it in."

Filppula gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead when he knocked in a loose puck off a goal-mouth scramble with 4:01 remaining in the middle period.

Torres tied it 2-2 with 7:15 left in the second period when he put in a shot from the bottom of the right circle.

Detroit scored two power-play goals in the game's first eight minutes to take a 2-0 lead.

Zetterberg got his 33rd goal on a one-timer from the right circle, and Holmstrom his 21st by tipping in Lidstrom's shot.

Smyth made it 2-1 with a power-play goal with five minutes left in the first, when he put in his own rebound for his 31st.

"It's a huge win for us. Everybody that we're chasing got points last night, we were able to stay in the pack with them," Roloson said. "We were able to play smart and simplify our game and capitalize on our chances."

Notes

  • Detroit placed G Joey MacDonald on waivers on Friday.
  • Edmonton C Petr Nedved missed his third game with a knee injury.
  • Edmonton RW Joffrey Lupul left the game after taking a hard check from Red Wings' D Niklas Kronwall at the Detroit blue line with four minutes left in the first period. Lupul had an undisclosed injury and did not return. Kronwall got a penalty for interference.
