Jessica Ghawi wrote under the name of Jessica Redfield in honor of her grandmother.

The shooting rampage at an Aurora, Colo. movie theater last week took 12 lives and left 58 others injured. It was a tragedy that was felt all over the country, especially in the hockey community.

Among the 12 people killed was Jessica Ghawi, a hockey blogger under the name Jessica Redfield, credential media member of the Colorado Avalanche and volunteer for the You Can Play project which aims at wiping out homophobia in sports, particularly hockey.

The tributes came pouring in from all over the hockey world, such as this great tribute from Jesse Spector of the Sporting News and this one from Adrian Dater of the Denver Post.

Then there's Peter Burns, a radio talk show host who hired Ghawi as an intern and persuaded her to move to Denver from her home in San Antonio. Burns is working side by side with Ghawi's brother to create the Jessica Redfield Foundation college scholarship.

Jessica was an aspiring sports broadcaster who moved to Colorado only a year before to pursue her dream of a career in sports journalism.

We ask that you help us kick start the Official Jessica Redfield Sports Journalism Scholarship Fund.

Jessica was an avid blogger and tweeter, and we hope we can show how powerful social media can be during times of tragedy.

The Stanley Cup champions and the organization with the most profilic social media presence heard that request.

From KDVR in Denver:

Burns said his original goal was to raise $20,000 in two months, but obviously he has exceeded his goal in just three days.

Most of the donations have come from individuals wanting to do something positive; however, Peter said a large donation came from the Los Angeles Kings, which donated $10,000.

With that large donation from the Kings the amount of money raised thus far is rather staggering.

What a great move by the Kings organization, one that hopefully will be met with similar responses from other teams around the NHL. The Avalanche have already said that they will do something this season to honor Ghawi, they just aren't sure yet what that will be.

Ghawi narrowly escaped a tragedy just weeks before, writing a chilling blog about her experience in a mall shooting in Toronto in June.
