Sometimes a hockey puck can do pretty amazing things, like staying out of the net when it really has no business not going in.
That happened to the Chicago Blackhawks in the first period of Game 2 on Wednesday night. Magically a puck that three times looked destined for the back of the net never actually crossed the red line and only once was because of LA Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick.
With the play breaking down in the Kings defensive zone, Patrick Kane was able to get a hard backhander on a mostly open net, one Quick was able to punch into the air. It still drifted over his head. It appeared to graze the crossbar and bounce slightly out but then Peter Regin was cross-checked and the puck went off his helmet back toward the goal line.
Then comes the really tricky part. The puck gets all the way to the line but then changes direction. It's hard to pick up exactly why, it might have been Regin's stick, it might have been Dustin Brown's stick or it might have just been magic. We can't rule out that option.
Either way, Willie Mitchell was penalized for the cross-check on Regin and the Blackhawks scored on the ensuing power play so they still got the goal but that was one of the wildest sequences you'll see on the goal line.
