There has been a bit of a spearing epidemic in the postseason, one that Stars forward Ryan Garbutt continued on Friday night in Anaheim.

Garbutt was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for giving Ducks star Corey Perry the ol' cup check in the first period. Just add it to the growing list of nastiness we've seen in this series through the first four-plus games.

The spear came in the neutral zone amid line changes but it wasn't missed (GIF via The Score).

Yea, you can't do that. It will be interesting to see what the NHL Department of Player Safety thinks of this, Garbutt did get the game misconduct and the major, a pretty strong penalty as it is.

Of course it could have been some retribution from the Stars on Perry because in Game 2, it was Perry who gave Stars captain Jamie Benn a cup check. An eye for an eye?

Garbutt has had an effective series (and season) as a growing pest in the league. He had two goals in the first four games and has helped give the Stars a strong third-line presence. He had 17 goals and 15 assists this season, both well above career bests.
