  • Red Wings' Johan Franzen: Details daily struggles

Diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, Franzen said he's in a daily battle with depression, anxiety and panic attacks, Ted Kulfan of The Detroit Free Press reports.

This information was originally disseminated by Gunnar Nordstrom from the Swedish web site SportExpression; he interviewed Franzen on Sunday. Now 38 years old but technically still under contract with the Red Wings until 2019-20, the Swede affectionally known as "The Mule" spent parts of 11 seasons playing for Detroit and scored 187 goals to complement 183 assists over 602 career contests. Franzen, who's reportedly sustained at least four concussions, said he's embarrassed by his memory loss but has "visited numerous doctors" and aspires to eventually move back home from his current residence in Detroit.

  • Red Wings' Johan Franzen: Intensive treatment for post-concussion syndrome

Franzen (concussion) has entered an "intensive treatment program" in Denver, MLive.com reports.

Franzen ranks 22nd all-time among Red Wings in points with 370 (187 goals, 183 assists) over 602 career games. He hasn't appeared in a game since October of 2015, as post-concussion syndrome has taken a serious toll on him. "The last months have been really bad," Franzen's wife Cissi wrote in her blog entitled "Franzen Residence," but the family remains "very hopeful for the future" as the winger seeks treatment at the Marcus Brain Health Institute. Franzen is technically still under contract with Detroit at a cap hit of $3.954 million -- a figure assuaged by his long-term injured reserve designation.

  • Red Wings' Johan Franzen: Exempt from Vegas expansion draft

Franzen (concussion) is exempt from the expansion draft, per an agreement with the NHLPA, Craig Custance of ESPN reports.

On Tuesday, the NHL released a list of 12 players -- including Franzen -- who will not be exposed in the Las Vegas expansion draft. The commonality between said players is that they're all dealing with long-term injuries, and in several cases, unlikely to play again despite possessing active contracts. For example, Franzen -- also known as "The Mule" -- remains on the books for Detroit through the 2019-20 season, but he hasn't played since October of 2015.

  • Red Wings' Johan Franzen: Lands on long-term injured reserve

Franzen (concussion) was placed on long-term injured reserve Tuesday, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.

This move was expected, as Franzen has missed the majority of the past two seasons due to concussion-like symptoms and reportedly will remain on long-term injured reserve for the four years remaining on his 11-year contract with the Red Wings. It's undoubtedly tragic for such a fantastic career to be derailed by injury, but one can look back on Franzen's tremendous accomplishments fondly, particularly his performance in the 2008 playoffs, in which he scored 13 goals in 16 playoff games to help Detroit secure its 11th Stanley Cup.

  • Red Wings' Johan Franzen: Unable to shake off concussion symptoms

Franzen (concussion) is likely to remain on long-term injured reserve for the four years that remain on his contract with the Red Wings, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Franzen, who missed the majority of the 2014-15 campaign and only lasted two games this season, explained that his concussion symptoms resurface whenever he attempts to exert himself. Khan suggested that Franzen's situation mirrors that of Marc Savard and Chris Pronger, former stars still possessing NHL contracts without much of a chance to ever play again due to the their respective concussions. As sad as it is to see a career derailed by injury, one can marvel at Franzen's past accomplishments with Detroit. The "Mule" collected 370 points (187 goals, 183 assists) in 602 career games, adding power-play tallies in nearly 20 percent of his appearances. In 2008, Franzen scored 13 goals in 16 playoff games and helped Detroit earn its 11th Stanley Cup.
