Tuesday night's SmackDown Live was jam-packed with action and developments, though much of it was rather yawn-inducing. There were three major developments from the show, though, and they involved the program's three major championships.

Jinder Mahal decided to defend the WWE title in a Punjabi Prison Match against Randy Orton at Battleground. Daniel Bryan decided to hold a battle royal on the July 4 edition of SmackDown to determine the No. 1 contender for Kevin Owens' United States Championship. And most importantly, Carmella was victorious in the women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match rematch, this time actually winning on her own.

Plenty went down Tuesday night, so rather than keep droning on, I'll let you get to it.

WWE SmackDown results

In the ring -- Daniel Bryan, Carmella and James Ellsworth: The SmackDown general manager opened the show by promoting the two great women's matches set for Tuesday night. Carmella then hit the ring to rehash her case from last week of why there should not be a rematch. Bryan polled the crowd for its thoughts, which led Ellsworth to insult Bryan about his injury, claiming the former champion was a coward and made it up. "I should probably just fire you," Bryan said, "but tonight it's not about you, it's about the real superstars of SmackDown Live." Instead, Bryan decided not to ban Ellsworth from ringside but rather the entire arena. Ellsworth had to be chased and dragged out of the ring by security.

The repetition of the reasoning for the rematch -- and particularly Carmella's argument -- was unnecessary ... but the Ellsworth gimmick was definitely funny, so I guess it was all worth it in the end.

The Usos def. The Hype Bros via pinfall: A No. 1 contendership opportunity was on the line for the Hype Bros, who earned one prior to Zach Ryder getting injured but were made to fight for it by commissioner Shane McMahon. Ryder missed a Broski Boot late, and The Usos hit a frog splash to pick up the win.

In the ring -- The New Day and The Usos: Xavier Woods congradulated The Usos for winning a match and not leaving in the middle. The two teams then went back and forth spitting some bars, neither of which were any good.

With Battleground quite a ways off and The Hype Bros legitimately deserving a title shot prior to Ryder's injury, it makes little sense that WWE did not have them win the match with some interference from New Day. Instead, a Battleground match was made official between New Day and The Usos, and WWE now has to come up with three more weeks of tag team storyline to get there.

Fashion Vice -- Under Pressure: Breezango interrogated The Ascension with Fandango offering a pair of Eddie Money tickets as incentive to explain why they attacked Tyler Breeze, who soon put three water guns on the table along with iced tea and a cheese platter. Konnor would not let Viktor take the tickets -- "We only listen to grind core thrash metal, remember?!" -- and Ascension denied being the attackers, saying they only appeared at Money in the Bank to get on the card. During the interrogation, the Fashion Police office was again ransacked. When they returned, Ascension sneakily motioned toward the tickets hoping no one would notice.

This was just too good even with the awful logic gap considering the MITB appearance by Ascension. If a team is going to be the mystery attackers, then the only option left is American Alpha, which would be an obvious heel turn. Considering the lack of quality heel tag teams on SmackDown, this would make some sense.

Women's Championship -- Naomi (c) def. Lana via pinfall: Lana attacked Naomi from behind before the match and again just as the bell rang. She immediately hit the champion with her one move, the sitout hammerlock spinebuster, which once again did not result in victory. Naomi responded with a kick to the back of the head and a split-legged moonsault in a match that lasted under a minute. Naomi wiped her shoes off on Lana after the win, and Lana threw a fit.

With the other five women in the MITB matches, it made sense that WWE gave Lana these two showcase opportunities. The problem is that she has no move set and has no business in a title match. In that way, it's nice that Naomi got a squash win this time around. Where they go from here with Lana will be interesting.

In the ring -- Randy Orton, Shane McMahon and Jinder Mahal: Interrupting a singing Aiden English, who immediately left, a seated Orton said he would not leave the ring until he got exactly what he wanted: a rematch for the WWE title. Orton promised to stalk and beat down Jinder Mahal at every turn if he did not agree, which brought the commissioner out. Orton went on to say that he was so bothered by Mahal's disrespect that he would find him even if fired and arrested. McMahon went on to make the match but said the stipulation would be left up to the WWE champion. That led Mahal to hit the stage and say he has chosen a Punjabi Prison Match in honor of The Great Khali.

If the only reason for giving Mahal the title was to put on another Punjabi Prision Match (it wasn't), then I've finally bought in. This gimmick if fantastic and should make for an epic sight at Battleground. Unfortunately, it's hard to believe in a result other than Mahal winning.

Backstage -- AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens: Styles was questioning the rules of Owens' open challenge to Bryan when Owens interrupted and said it was just like Styles, an American, to talk behind someone's back. "You are Ron Burgundy's definition of San Diego," Styles said in a retort. Bryan then explained to Owens the rules of John Cena's U.S. Open Challenge and decided to hold a battle royal on July 4 to determine the No. 1 contender for Owens' title at Battleground.

On stage -- Mike & Maria Kanellis: Making their first appearance on SmackDown, the couple only got out a dozen words or so before Sami Zayn's music hit and interrupted them.

Baron Corbin def. Sami Zayn via pinfall: Now that Corbin has the Money in the Bank briefcase, it was necessary for him to get a win over Zayn, who defeated him thrice in their rivalry prior to the MITB match. Corbin hit Zayn with End of Days to end a decent match.

Backstage -- Shinsuke Nakamura: Asked if he would like to fight Corbin one-on-one, Nakamura admitted that Corbin is dangerous but said it is Corbin that should be afraid of Nakamura.

Money in the Bank Ladder Match -- Carmella def. Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya and Tamina Snuka: Carmella attempted to climb the ladder early only to see the rest of the women surround her and shake their heads before pulling her down. Lynch spent the early part of the match hitting various exploder suplexes in and out of the ring, while Snuka got a highlight spot by landing a Superfly Splash on Lynch. At one point, Flair and Snuka fought over a folded ladder, so Lynch ran up it vertically only to be kicked off. Flair kicked one ladder into Snuka, so Natalya threw another at the former women's champion before setting up the 12-foot ladder and getting a hand on the briefcase. Flair tilted over the ladder she was hit with and used it as a ramp to connect to the tall ladder and climb to the briefcase. That led Carmella into the ring to tilt over the ladder and knock both women out.

After returning from a second commercial break, the four women sans Carmella found themselves on the ladder simultaneously and all fell off, rolling outside the ring. Carmella entered the ring, took way too much time climbing and got one hand on the briefcase ... but the four women quickly reentered, picked up the ladder and moved it all the way to the ropes. Flair used the ladder to hit a flattened Snuka and reached the briefcase only to be flipped over -- along with Carmella -- by Snuka who lifted it up from the ground. Snuka's chance to climb was thwarted by Lynch and Natalya, who double powerbombed her off it. Natalya then hit Lynch with a serious sit-down powerbomb and placed Carmella in the Sharpshooter. Flair broke this up, hit Natural Selection on Carmella and tackled Natalya outside the ring; the two wound up over the barricade and continued to fight.

Suddenly, Ellsworth ran into the arena from the crowd, rolled Carmella into the ring, set hte ladder and climbed it again with Carmella waiting for him below. Lynch ran in to kick Carmella out of the ring and tilted the ladder over so Ellsworth got hung up on the ropes. Carmella pulled Lynch off the ladder, hurting her knee, and then used a steel chair to injure Lynch further. Carmella then climbe dhte ladder on her own and removed the briefcase to become Ms. Money in the Bank.

The biggest complaint here is a genuine one: WWE did not use the picture-in-picture commercial breaks for this match but did for some unimportant matches earlier. Why should fans have missed a second of a match they got screwed on at a pay-per-view? As far as Carmella going over, this is exactly how the original MITB match should have played out. There was no harm in Ellsworth interfering, but this result would have been so much more effective had it happened originally.
