  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Homers in Wednesday's win

Abreu went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Wednesday's 8-5 win over the Rays.

Abreu delivered the final scoring play for the Red Sox in this contest when he took Rays reliever Kevin Kelly deep in the sixth inning. Over the last four games, Abreu has gone 6-for-15 (.400) with five RBI and three extra-base hits. The 24-year-old outfielder continues to play well in a strong-side platoon role, slashing .275/.357/.486 with five homers, 20 RBI, 22 runs scored and seven stolen bases over 157 plate appearances this season.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Earns fifth win

Bello (5-2) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six over six innings to earn the win over the Rays on Wednesday.

Bello completed six innings for the second time in eight outings this season, and he earned his second quality start in the process. The Rays scored three times in the second inning, but the Red Sox offense rallied for eight runs over the fifth and sixth frames to give Bello plenty of support. The right-hander is now at a 4.04 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB through 42.1 innings. Walks typically haven't been an outsized issue for Bello, so there's not much reason for concern that he was a little wild Wednesday. He's projected to make his next start on the road versus the Orioles.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock: Decision on surgery coming next week

Whitlock is scheduled to visit Dr. Jeff Dugas in Birmingham, Ala. on May 30, at which point a decision will be made whether he'll require surgery to address his right elbow sprain, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Whitlock was originally placed on the 15-day injured list April 17 with a left oblique strain, but the health of his pitching elbow is now the Red Sox's chief concern after he sustained the injury in his lone rehab start for Triple-A Worcester last Wednesday. He's reportedly dealing with damage to his UCL, so while the early expectation is that he'll need some kind of procedure to address the injury, he'll first consult with Dr. Dugas to see if rest and rehab is a viable treatment plan. Even if Whitlock is able to avoid surgery, he's still likely looking at an extended absence and likely won't be ready to rejoin the Red Sox until the second half of the season even in a best-case scenario.

  • Red Sox's Dominic Smith: Added to lineup

Smith will start at first base and bat sixth Wednesday versus Tampa Bay, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Smith was originally scheduled to have Wednesday off, but he will now step in with Garrett Cooper battling a shoulder injury. Smith is slashing just .182/.224/.234 through 58 plate appearances this season, though he has recorded a base hit in six of his last eight games.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Cooper: Scratched Wednesday

Cooper was scratched from Boston's lineup prior to Wednesday's game against the Rays due to right shoulder discomfort, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

The severity of Cooper's injury isn't immediately apparent, but it's bothering him enough to keep him from playing Wednesday. Dominic Smith will enter the lineup to cover first base, meanwhile Cooper will have an extra day to rest Thursday before potentially returning Friday against the Brewers.

  • Red Sox's Dominic Smith: Out against righty Wednesday

Smith is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Even with the Rays bringing a right-hander (Ryan Pepiot) to the hill, the lefty-hitting Smith will find himself on the bench in the series finale. Smith has mustered a lowly .460 OPS since signing with Boston earlier this month, and he looks like he could soon be in danger of losing out on a regular spot in the lineup if he doesn't show improvement.

  • Red Sox's Isaiah Campbell: Starting rehab assignment

Campbell (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Campbell has been out since mid-April with a right shoulder impingement, but he's finally ready to move on the final phase of his recovery process. He will likely need multiple rehab appearances before returning from the 15-day injured list and rejoining Boston's bullpen.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: In lineup again Wednesday

Hamilton will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Wednesday's game versus the Rays.

Hamilton has now been in the lineup for five of the last six contests, with four of his starts coming at shortstop. With Hamilton getting the bulk of the reps at shortstop lately, Ceddane Rafaela has gone back to seeing most of his action in center field. Hamilton is 5-for-13 with one home run, two doubles, a triple and a stolen base in his last five tilts.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Takes seat Wednesday

O'Neill is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game in Tampa Bay.

O'Neill is getting a routine day off after starting in the last five games and 13 of the previous 14 contests. Rob Refsnyder will serve as the Red Sox's designated hitter, with Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu covering the corner-outfield spots.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Breaks home-run drought

McGuire went 2-for-3 with a solo home run during Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rays.

McGuire went yard in the ninth inning off Erasmo Ramirez, marking the catchers' third homer of the season and his first since April 7. McGuire has been operating as the backup to Connor Wong in May, and he hasn't shown enough at the plate to warrant more playing time since, batting .214 with Tuesday's long ball being his only extra-base hit during the month.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Steals home, goes yard

Duran went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a steal of home plate during Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rays.

The Red Sox executed a first-and-third double steal perfectly in the eighth inning, as the throw to second to catch Rafael Devers stealing was cut off early and the subsequent throw to home wasn't in time to tag the speedy Duran. Duran has hit safely in seven straight games, batting 10-for-27 (.370) with a pair of triples, solo home runs and stolen bases during that stretch.

  • Red Sox's Kenley Jansen: Picks up eighth save

Jansen collected the save Tuesday, allowing one hit and no walks over a scoreless inning against the Rays. He didn't generate a strikeout.

Jansen hadn't pitched since allowing a pair of runs and taking a loss May 16 and was able to shake off the rust after allowing a leadoff double to Isaac Paredes in the ninth, retiring three straight batters to pick up his eighth save of the season. The veteran closer owns a 5.14 ERA this month and has struck out seven batters in 7.0 innings.

  • Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Falls short of quality start

Criswell didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Tampa Bay, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk across 5.1 innings. He struck out six.

Both of the runs against Criswell came in the first inning, where he allowed Josh Lowe and Randy Arozarena to reach via hit to start the frame before Isaac Paredes plated them both with a single to left field. Despite not letting a runner reach scoring position after the first, Criswell's day came to an end early in the fifth when manager Alex Cora went to the bullpen in response to Yandy Diaz entering as a pinch hitter. With Garrett Whitlock (oblique) expected to undergo surgery, Criswell can be penciled into Boston's starting rotation for the foreseeable future. He's tentatively scheduled for a Monday start against the Orioles at Camden Yards.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Taking seat Tuesday

Wong is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Wong will get a day off Tuesday after starting four straight games for the BoSox. Reese McGuire will bat seventh and catch for Cooper Criswell.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Steals, scores in win

Hamilton started at second base and went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's 5-0 win over Tampa.

Hamilton made his fourth start in the last six games and has hit safely in five straight. Once a forgotten man on the roster -- he started just 12 times and had 50 plate appearances over 35 games after being called up April 6 -- Hamilton is 6-for-15 with four extra-base hits, three runs and three RBI during the hit streak. Vaughn Grissom (.135) has yet to establish himself as the everyday second baseman, so there is an opportunity for Hamilton to become a fantasy-relevant option.
