Northern Illinois' 2012 season began at Soldier Field in Chicago and will end in Miami for the Orange Bowl. The Huskies will be hoping for a similar tale in 2016.
The school announced Monday that it had agreed to a three-game series with Nebraska, with the first game to be played at Soldier Field in Chicago in 2016. The last two games will be played in Lincoln, in 2017 and 2019.
"Ever since the Iowa game this past September, I've been asked about the next Huskie home game at Soldier Field," NIU athletic director Jeff Compher said in a press release. "I am very pleased to announce this 2016 game in Chicago with Nebraska, one of the most storied programs in college football. This series would not have come together without the efforts of [Nebraska Director of Athletics] Tom Osborne so I especially want to thank him for his willingness to work with us to schedule these three games.
"The benefits of playing at Soldier Field cannot be overstated. It's a beautiful NFL venue that allows us to showcase our team and program to recruits, and to connect with our alumni base in the city."
The 2016 game will be the third time both Nebraska and Northern Illinois have met. The first two meetings came in 1989 and 1990 with Nebraska winning both games by a combined score of 108-31.
