Desmond declined the qualifying offer from the Nationals and will remain a free agent, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports.

The move comes as little surprise, despite a disappointing 2015 campaign in which he hit just .233 and committed an NL-worst 27 errors. He has plenty of power at a position mostly lacking home run hitters and just turned 30 in September, so he should command a multi-year deal in free agency.
