Shortstop turned outfielder Ian Desmond is moving on from the Rangers. The free agent has reportedly agreed to a hefty multiyear contract with the Rockies.

It's interesting to note the Rockies currently have a full outfield with Carlos Gonzalez and David Dahl flanking center fielder Charlie Blackmon. They also have a pricey fourth outfielder in Gerardo Parra, and top prospect Raimel Tapia knocking on the door.

The Desmond signing could be a precursor to another move -- CarGo is certainly no stranger to the trade rumor mill, though there would be a ton of interest in the underrated Blackmon as well -- or another position change. Colorado has an opening at first base and has used Parra there in the past. Desmond and/or Gonzalez could man the position going forward.

Desmond rejected the qualifying offer from the Rangers earlier this season, which means the Rockies will forfeit their first round pick (11th overall) to sign him. That's the highest unprotected pick. Texas will receive a supplemental first round pick as compensation for losing Desmond.

Last offseason the qualifying offer caused Desmond's market to dry up. It wasn't until February that he signed with the Rangers, and even then he had to take a one-year contract and agree to a position change. Obviously the qualifying offer wasn't much of a deterrent this winter.

The 31-year-old Desmond hit .285/.335/.446 (104 OPS+) with 22 home runs and 21 steals during his only season with the Rangers. He went to the All-Star Game and also shifted to the outfield seamlessly.
