Some trades seem to make sense. Others, like dealing a pitching prospect the caliber of Timothy Alderson for a so-so middle infielder -- even if Freddy Sanchez is an "All-Star" -- don't.

We break down the key movers in the trade deadline deals below, but we would be remiss if we didn't at least touch on the top prospects changing teams. The analysis in the tables below focuses on the present-day impact in Fantasy, but here is a subjective ranking for the long-term keeper prospects on the move:

  1. Timothy Alderson, SP, PIT
  2. Aaron Poreda, SP, SD ... changing leagues.
  3. Jeff Clement, C, PIT ... changing leagues.
  4. Carlos Carrasco, SP, CLE ... changing leagues.
  5. Jason Knapp, SP, CLE ... changing leagues.
  6. Nick Hagadone, SP, CLE
  7. Joshua Bell, 3B, BAL ... changing leagues.
  8. Aaron Thompson, SP, WAS
  9. Bryan Price, SP, CLE
  10. Joshua Harrison, 3B, PIT
  11. Lou Marson, C, CLE ... changing leagues.
  12. Jason Donald, SS, CLE ... changing leagues
  13. Tyler Ladendorf, SS, OAK
  14. Mauricio Robles, SP, SEA

The list of prospects changing teams doesn't end there, but these are the ones with the most value as long-term keepers right now. Keep coming back to this page as it will be updated through Friday night's trade deadline.

Heading to the AL

Jake Peavy, SP, CHW
Traded to the White Sox for LHP Aaron Poreda, LHP Clayton Richard, RHP Adam Russell and RHP Dexter Carter.
AL FAAB rank: 1
Mixed league Fantasy value: Increasing. We are not sure Peavy will be ready to pitch before September, but he gives AL-only leagues a big fish to target off waivers. A month of Peavy is likely still more intriguing than anyone else heading to the AL.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Likely Sunday, Aug. 3.
Edwin Encarnacion, 3B, TOR
Traded to the Blue Jays with RHP Josh Roenicke and RHP Zach Stewart for 3B Scott Rolen.
AL FAAB rank: 2
Mixed league Fantasy value: Steady. The Blue Jays might have scored a steal in this one, getting a powerful third baseman before his prime for a veteran far past his. Encarnacion has battled a troublesome wrist issue, but his power makes him a must-add in all AL-only leagues and a potential sleeper for deeper mixed formats
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Likely Sunday, Aug. 3.
Casey Kotchman, 1B, BOS
Traded to the Red Sox for 1B Adam LaRoche.
NL FAAB rank: 3
Mixed league Fantasy value: Low-end 1B stopgap. Fenway Park is a better place to swing the bat and Kotchman has not yet tapped into his potential, but the Red Sox figure to slot him as a part-time first baseman and defensive replacement. Kevin Youkilis, Victor Martinez, Mike Lowell and David Ortiz will get getting at-bats more than Kotchman will.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Likely Sunday, Aug 2.
Jerry Hairston, OF, NYY
Traded to the Yankees for C Chase Weems.
AL FAAB rank: 4
Mixed league Fantasy value: Minimal. He switches leagues and has value in deeper AL-only Rotisserie formats, but he loses regular at-bats. He will be coming off the bench for the Yankees, barring injury.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Likely Sunday, Aug. 2.
Ian Snell, SP, SEA
Traded to the Mariners with SS Jack Wilson for SS Ronny Cedeno, C Jeff Clement, RHP Nathan Adcock, RHP Brett Lorin and RHP Aaron Pribanic.
AL FAAB rank: 5
Mixed league Fantasy value: Minimal. He heads to Triple-A, but his talent and Triple-A hot streak suggest he can be in the Mariners' rotation soon.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Friday, July 31.
Jack Wilson, SS, SEA
Traded to the Mariners with RHP Ian Snell for SS Ronny Cedeno, C Jeff Clement, RHP Nathan Adcock, RHP Brett Lorin and RHP Aaron Pribanic.
AL FAAB rank: 6
Mixed league Fantasy value: Minimal. He is a low-end option who might merely be an AL-only option at this point in his career
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Friday, July 31.

Others heading to the AL: Carlos Carrasco, SP, CLE; Josh Roenicke, RP, TOR; Zach Stewart, SP, TOR; Jason Knapp, SP, CLE; Lou Marson, C, PHI; Jason Donald, SS, PHI; Josh Bell, 3B, BAL; Steve Johnson, RP, BAL; and Robert Manuel, RP, SEA.

Heading to the NL

Cliff Lee, SP, PHI
Traded to the Phillies with OF Ben Francisco for RHP Jason Knapp, RHP Carlos Carrasco, C Lou Marson and SS Jason Donald.
NL FAAB rank: 1
Mixed league Fantasy value: Elite starting pitcher.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Saturday, Aug. 1.
Adam A. LaRoche, 1B, ATL
Traded to the Braves for 1B Casey Kotchman.
NL FAAB rank: 2
Mixed league Fantasy value: Increasing. He returns to a familiar place and will again get full-time at-bats without competition. He is a viable starter in mixed leagues again.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Likely Sunday, Aug 1.
Scott Rolen, 3B, CIN
Traded to the Reds for 3B Edwin Encarnacion, RHP Josh Roenicke and RHP Zach Stewart.
NL FAAB rank: 3
Mixed league Fantasy value: Steady. He should play every day for the Reds, which have a better park for homers. Rolen has a strong average but he hasn't been a real power threat for years. Cincy's bandbox could help him some.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Likely Sunday, Aug. 3.
Clayton Richard, SP, SD
Traded to the Padres with LHP Aaron Poreda, RHP Adam Russell and SP Dexter Carter.
NL FAAB rank: 4
Mixed league Fantasy value: Increasing slightly. Richard moves from a contender to one of the worst teams in baseball, but he will likely have a full-time rotation spot with a challenge now. And he will get to pitch in a great pitcher's park.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Likely Sunday, Aug. 3.
Ben Francisco, OF, PHI
Traded to the Phillies with LHP Cliff Lee for RHP Jason Knapp, RHP Carlos Carrasco, C Lou Marson and SS Jason Donald.
NL FAAB rank: 5
Mixed league Fantasy value: Minimal. He becomes a No. 4 outfielder, albeit one that could get starts vs. left-handed starters.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Saturday, Aug 1.
George Sherrill, RP, LAD
Traded to the Dodgers for 3B Joshua Bell and RHP Steve Johnson
NL FAAB rank: 6
Mixed league Fantasy value: Minimal. He loses his closer's role and might only get token save chances behind Jonathan Broxton.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Saturday, Aug 1.
Ronny Cedeno, SS, PIT
Traded to the Pirates with C Jeff Clement, RHP Nathan Adcock, RHP Brett Lorin and RHP Aaron Pribanic for SP Ian Snell and SS Jack Wilson.
NL FAAB rank: 7
Mixed league Fantasy value: Minimal. There is speed-and-power potential, but we are all growing old waiting for it to come through.
Available via waivers on CBSSports.com: Friday, July 31.

Others heading to the NL: Aaron Poreda, SP, SD; Jeff Clement, C, PIT; Adam Russell, RP, SD; Dexter Carter, SP, SD; Nathan Adcoch, SP, PIT; Brett Lorin, SP, PIT; Aaron Pribanic, PIT; and Chase Weems, C, CIN.

Staying in the same league

Victor Martinez, C, BOS
Traded to the Red Sox for RHP Justin Masterson, LHP Nick Hagadone and RHP Bryan Price.
Fantasy value: Steady, but only because he remains the No. 2 overall catcher in Fantasy. He will get a lot more RBI opportunities with the Red Sox, even if he has more competition for at-bats. He will play as much as possible between catcher, first base and DH.
Jarrod Washburn, SP, DET
Traded to the Tigers for LHP Luke French and LHP Mauricio Robles.
Fantasy value: Increasing. Washburn stays in a pitcher's park, but he gets a top contender with a solid offense to work with now. He was having a renaissance and now can be a consistent winner for all leagues here on out. He gives the Tigers a sturdy top three starters.
Orlando Cabrera, SS, MIN
Traded to the Twins for SS Tyler Ladendorf.
Fantasy value: Increasing. Cabrera will be the catalyst for a much better Twins offense that features a pair of MVP candidates in Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer. Cabrera had a bad second half, but he has been resurgent of late and still is promising enough to perform among the top 12 shortstops in Fantasy.
Nick Johnson, 1B, FLA
Traded to the Marlins for LHP Aaron Thompson.
Fantasy value: Increasing. Johnson will play first base every day, moving Jorge Cantu back over to third and Emilio Bonifacio to a more suitable super-utility role. Johnson is a solid, professional hitter who can drive in more runs in that lineup, even if that is a tough park to hit homers in.
Freddy Sanchez, 2B, SF
Traded to the Giants for RHP Timothy Alderson.
Fantasy value: No change. Sanchez is a durable and steady middle infielder, but his lack of homers or steals make him a low-end option in mixed leagues. Moving to the pitcher's park in San Francisco won't do him any favors either.
Justin Masterson, RHP, CLE
Traded to the Indians with LHP Nick Hagadone and RHP Bryan Price for C Victor Martinez.
Fantasy value: Masterson was caught in the Pitch-22 with the Red Sox (good enough to start, but too valuable in relief). He could stretch out and start for the Indians before the end of the year, which would make him viable in all Fantasy leagues again. He is a potential 15-game winner annually, while Hagadone and Price might not prove to be viable front-line starters.
Luke French, SP, SEA
Traded to the Mariners with RHP Mauricio Robles for LHP Jarrod Washburn.
Fantasy value: Decreasing. French isn't an elite prospect, but Robles is a decent one. French has a future in the majors as a solid left-hander, but his future needs to be determined whether it's in the bullpen or the rotation. The Mariners could use him in the rotation now.
Tom Gorzelanny, SP, CHC
Traded to the Cubs with LHP John Grabow for RHP Kevin Hart, RHP Jose Ascanio and 3B Joshua Harrison.
Fantasy value: Rising. If he gets the No. 5 starter's spot with the Cubs, he will have value in almost any Fantasy league. He could be a real sleeper.
Kevin Hart, SP, PIT
Traded to the Pirates with RHP Jose Ascanio and 3B Joshua Harrison for LHP John Grabow and LHP Tom Gorzelanny.
Fantasy value: Minimal. He goes from being a No. 5 starter on a top contender with a great offense to perhaps being a reliever for one of baseball's buried franchises. He won't have much value even as a starter.
Claudio Vargas, RHP, MIL
Traded to the Brewers for C Vinny Rottino.
Fantasy value: Minimal. With Jeff Suppan on the DL, the Brewers sorely needed pitching depth and they know Vargas well. He could stretch out and be a candidate to start, which would give him value in NL-only leagues.
John Grabow, RP, CHC
Traded to the Cubs with LHP Tom Gorzelanny for RHP Kevin Hart, RHP Jose Ascanio and 3B Joshua Harrison.
Fantasy value: Minimal. He is merely a situational lefty reliever for the Cubs, but at least he isn't with the lowly Pirates anymore.
Joe Beimel, RP, COL
Traded to the Rockies for TBD.
Fantasy value: Minimal. He is merely a situational lefty reliever for the Rockies, but at least he isn't with the lowly Nationals anymore.

Others changing teams, but not leagues: Jose Ascanio, RP, PIT; Nick Hagadone, SP, CLE; Aaron Thompson, SP, WAS; Bryan Price, SP, CLE; Joshua Harrison, 3B, PIT; Mauricio Robles, SP, SEA and Vinny Rottino, C, LAD.

Opportunity knocks

Fausto Carmona, SP, CLE
Called up to Indians rotation.
Fantasy value: Rising. The Indians are a bottom-feeder, but Carmona had good enough numbers in the minors (2.72 ERA, .215 BAA) to be a viable pick-up in deeper mixed formats immediately. He is starting Friday for the Indians.
Jim R. Johnson, RP, BAL
Might become the new closer for the Orioles.
Fantasy value: Rising. The Orioles also have veteran Danys Baez and reclamation project Chris Ray to choose from, but Johnson has served a solid apprenticeship as the Orioles' setup man. Despite his ERA approaching 6.00 in July, we expect Johnson to serve as the closer. A questionable closer on a non-contender like the Orioles is a low-end option, though.
Delwyn Young, 2B, PIT
Gets the first crack at being the Pirates' everyday second baseman.
Fantasy value: Rising. We already know Young can hit. Now we know he will get the chance to play every day. And he will be getting eligibility at the thinnest position in Fantasy. He is good enough to develop into a mixed league Fantasy second baseman and is a must-own in all NL-only leagues. He could be a .280-15-80-80-0 player in a full season at the position.
