Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with inflammation of the AC joint of his right shoulder, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Even if his health weren't a factor, Gonzalez may have been on the outs for a rotation spot after giving up four-plus runs in his last three outings, including a season-worst eight runs in his most recent turn Wednesday against the Orioles. James Shields (shoulder) was activated from the disabled list in a corresponding move and will assume Gonzalez's starting role.
