Rivers said that he won't exercise his contract option for the 2016-17 season and will test free agency this summer, Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com reports.

Had he picked up the option, Rivers would have been due $3.3 million for the upcoming season. However, after recording a few solid performances on the occasions he received more extended minutes when Chris Paul was sitting out during the 2015-16 campaign, Rivers evidently believes he can increase his salary by hitting the open market. It's unclear if any team is willing to sign Rivers with the intention of making him a full-time starter, but with the cap rising, he'll still likely earn a pay increase no matter where he ends up landing, and no matter what role he assumes.
