Coreau is currently 8-2 for AHL Grand Rapids in the 2017 Calder Cup playoffs. He could start next season as a backup goalie for the Red Wings in the likely event that the team moves on from Jimmy Howard or Petr Mrazek, the Detroit Free Press reports.

While the Northern Michigan University product has been associated with the AHL's Griffins since 2013-14, this marks his first year as a starter for the minor-league club. Coreau's peripherals (2.53 GAA, .915 save percentage) aren't the strongest this time around, but they at least represent a return to near normalcy. The 25-year-old experienced a rude awakening at the NHL level to the tune of a 3.46 GAA and .887 save mark through 14 games as a substitute for Howard, who missed 32 contests with a knee injury. It might take a few seasons for Coreau to fully adjust to the fast-paced nature of the NHL game, but he's said to have a sound working relationship with Wings goalie coach Jeff Salajko; that bodes well for his fantasy prospects.
