Lehner is on track to open the 2017-18 season as the Sabres' No. 1 goaltender, The Buffalo News reports.
Jason Botterill was hired as the new general manager of the Swords last Thursday, succeeding Tim Murray, who failed to get the team into the playoffs during his tenure from 2014-17. "I have no problem starting next season with him in goal," Botterill said to Sportsnet. "There are more pressing needs. I liked what I saw from him when he won the Calder Cup." Lehner, a pending restricted free agent, posted an underwhelming 23-26-8 record to go along with a 2.68 GAA, .920 save percentage and a pair of shutouts this season. You would have to go back to the 2012-13 campaign to see when Lehner last had a winning record -- he went 5-3-4 as a rarely used goalie for the Senators. However, that shiny save percentage in combination with the Sabres' developing corps of young talent gives him upside for 2017-18.
