After a difficult first-round win at Wimbledon, Maria Sharapova said Monday she wants to “move on” from her war of words with Serena Williams.
Sharapova publicly discussed Williams’ private life on Saturday after believing Williams had crossed a line with her comments in a Rolling Stone interview.
“I have said everything that I wanted to say about the issue,” Sharapova said, via the London Evening Standard.
“This is my work. This is my job. I would really appreciate it if we move on. Our job is to go out on the court and work and try to win matches and nothing else. That is the most important thing to me in my life right now.”
Williams said Sunday that she had personally apologized to Sharapova last Thursday, but Sharapova would not confirm that.
Sharapova was asked if she’s friends with other tennis players.
“I think everyone just thinks because we’re tennis players we should be the greatest of friends. But ultimately tennis is just a very small part of what we do,” Sharapova said, via the Washington Post. “There’s so many other things that we’re interested in.”
