A long-time girls high school basketball coach in Mississippi resigned on Monday, according to police, after he was accused of biting one of his player’s faces during a timeout in a game earlier this month.
Doyle Wolverton, who reportedly is second all-time nationally with 1,245 girls basketball wins and has been the coach at Leake Academy since 1975, was accused of biting the unnamed player’s face on Nov. 12, according to Leake County Sheriff Greg Waggoner.
“I have no comment on any of that,” Wolverton told The Clarion Ledger on Monday. “It’s all still being … I can’t say anything right now.”
The player eventually went to an emergency room at a Carthage, Mississippi hospital where nurses called the sheriff’s department because of the nature of the injury. Waggoner says the family has declined to press charges.
"We haven't been involved directly with anything since [the hospital] because the parents and the coach are trying to settle matters themselves," Waggoner said.
A police report filed by Toby Thaggard, the girl’s father, asserts that Wolverton allegedly grabbed the player “by the shirt and then bit her on the right side of her face,” after an apparent bad play in a game at Columbia Academy last week.
