Former boxing world champion Antonio Cermeno was killed in his native Venezuela after being kidnapped, police said Tuesday.

According to the Associated Press, Cermeno and some of his relatives were kidnapped Monday in Caracas. His relatives escaped when the kidnappers refueled the car, but Cermeno, 44, wasn't able to get away.

He was found dead Tuesday of a gunshot wound.

Cermeno held both the super bantamweight and featherweight titles in the 90's before retiring in 2006 with a 45-7 record.
