Earlier this week, noted homer White Sox announcer Ken "Hawk" Harrelson went on a bit of a tirade against umpire Mark Wegner. And it would appear MLB commissioner Bud Selig was none-too-happy about the implication that Wegner isn't held accountable and "knows nothing about the game of baseball."

Note the language of Hawk's quote to ESPN Chicago:

"I talked to Bud Selig yesterday," Harrelson said. "We had a talk. Actually, Bud talked and I listened. If it was a prize fight, they would have stopped it in the first round.

No minions, Selig himself laid the smack down on poor ol' Hawk.

Harrelson also told ESPN Chicago that White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf -- a long-time Selig ally -- had a talk with him.

More Selig/umpires
Harrelson was angry after White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana was tossed from the game after a seemingly retaliatory pitch in the direction of Ben Zobrist of the Rays. White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was plunked the previous inning, but no warnings were made.

While Hawk certainly has a case that this was an uncalled for ejection -- in light of the no warnings -- riling up home-town viewers with whining of this caliber is a bit much:

"What are you doing? He threw him out of the ballgame, you've got to be bleepin' me! What in the hell are you doing? What are you doing Wegner? You got to be kidding me. That is so bad that is absolutely brutal. That is unbelievable. I'll tell you what, they have got to start making guys be accountable. That is totally absurd. Here's an umpire in the American League that knows nothing about the game of baseball. They have got to do something about this. They have got some guys in this league that have no business umpiring. They have no business umpiring because they don't know what the game of baseball is about."

Mercy!

It's just a shame we'll never hear the one-sided "conversation" Selig and Harrelson had. I'd love to hear Selig's stern/authoritative voice. It just has to be funny, doesn't it?
