You know that Andy Pettitte commercial hawking Dove that showed his prom photos? The second batter Pettitte faced on Monday wasn't even born when Pettitte was styling in that dirty-lip mustache. Clearwater Threshers shortstop Edgar Duran was born Feb. 10, 1991 -- nearly a year after the Yankees took Pettitte in the 22nd round of the 1990 draft.
The 39-year-old Pettitte made his first minor-league start Monday in his comeback from a year off of baseball. The Yankees left-hander gave up a run and two hits in three innings for the Class A Tampa Yankees. Pettitte gave up two doubles and had a wild pitch, striking out two. Of his 32 pitches, 26 were strikes, according to MLB.com.
"I just know this is a process -- it's going to take a little bit of time," Pettitte told MLB.com. "Tonight was another good step. My legs felt really good under me. It's another good step in the right direction."
Pettitte hadn't pitched since throwing an inning of relief in a Grapefruit League game last Wednesday. He is expected to start again on Sunday and could return to New York by May.
Pettitte wasn't the only senior in the game, as Philadelphia's Jose Contreras, 40, threw a perfect inning of relief for the Threshers, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
