The Astros have released veteran reliever Francisco Cordero, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reported Monday.

Cordero was acquired in a 10-player deal with the Blue Jays on July 20. He struggled with the Jays, first closing after Sergio Santos went down with an injury and later setting up Casey Janssen. The 37-year-old managed only a 5.77 ERA in 34 1/2 innings with Toronto, blowing six saves while converting only two opportunities. He also had six holds.

Things didn't get any better for Cordero with Houston. In five innings, opponents managed 13 hits (two home runs) and scored 11 runs, tabbing Cordero with a 19.80 ERA. With 14 seasons under his belt and seemingly no gas left in the tank, Cordero's career could be done. If so, he would finish with a 3.38 ERA and 329 saves in 14 seasons of MLB service.
