Brewers sign shortstop Alex Gonzalez to one-year deal

The Brewers have signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one-year, $1.5 million deal. Gonzalez can earn close to another $1 million based on how well he performs.

The Brewers have signed shortstop Alex Gonzalez to a one-year, $1.5 million deal, confirms Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com had the initial report. Gonzalez can earn close to another $1 million from incentives. 

Gonzalez, 35, was a member of the Brewers last season but had just 89 plate appearances. He hit .259/.326/.457. A 14-year veteran, Gonzalez spent the bulk of his career with the Marlins. He’s also played for the Reds, Braves, Red Sox, Blue Jays and Brewers.

Jean Segura, who was acquired in the Zack Greinke trade, is expected to be the starting shortstop. Gonzalez should provide depth behind Segura. The Brewers don't have established backups for second baseman Rickie Weeks and third baseman Aramis Ramirez. Gonzalez has never played a position other than shortstop.
