The Rangers sent right-hander Jake Brigham to the Cubs at the trade deadline in exchange for catcher Geovany Soto. However, the 24-year-old made just two starts for the Cubs' Double-A Tennessee squad, giving up eight earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings before being shut down with a right elbow strain.
Because of the injury, the Rangers on Tuesday sent right-hander Barret Loux and a player to be named to Chicago in exchange for Brigham, who was placed on the team's 40-man roster. Brigham was 5-5 with a 4.28 ERA at Double-A Frisco before the trade, striking out 116 batters and walking 46 in 124 innings.
Loux, 23, was taken sixth overall in the 2010 draft by the Diamondbacks out of Texas A&M. Loux agreed to a $2-million deal with Arizona, but an MRI showed a slight tear of his labrum and also wear and tear on his elbow, so the Diamondbacks decided not to sign him. Loux later signed with the Rangers. I talked to him in May about the start to his career.
This season Loux went 14-1 with a 3.47 ERA for the Rangers' Double-A Frisco team, earning Texas League Pitcher of the Year honors, striking out 100 batters and walking 41 in 127 innings.
At the time of the deal, the two teams agreed to revisit the deal at the end of the season.
