Diamondbacks All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was hit in the left hand with a pitch Friday night. The only thing the club said after the game was that he'd be evaluated Saturday. It would appear the evaluation yielded some pretty depressing news:

No timetable has been given as to a possible return, but with a broken hand, less than two months left in the season and the Diamondbacks among the worst teams in baseball, it's not a stretch to believe that Goldschmidt's season is over.
Goldschmidt, 26, is hitting .300/.396/.542 (158 OPS+) with 19 homers, 69 RBI and nine stolen bases. He also leads the majors with 39 doubles and 75 runs scored. He's followed up his breakout 2013 season by proving he's no fluke and is among the best players in baseball.
Needless to say, this is a devastating blow the Diamondbacks, though they weren't in contention anyway. In fact, they're only 4.5 games better than the Rangers for the worst record in baseball. It's plausible to suggest that this injury gives them a shot at the number one overall draft pick in 2015.
