The San Francisco Giants announced Monday that the team has claimed infielder Tony Abreu off waivers from the Royals.

Abreu was designated for assignment in late January after the Royals claimed catcher George Kottaras off waivers.

The 28-year-old switch-hitting Abreu has played 168 games since debuting in 2007, hitting .252/.280/.355 with four home runs in 464 plate appearances.

Abreu hit .257/.284/.357 in 74 plate appearances last season with the Royals. He spent most of his season with Triple-A Omaha, hitting .322/.347/.492 with nine home runs and seven stolen bases in 453 plate appearances. Abreau is a familier face in the NL West, playing for the Diamondbacks in 2010 and the Dodgers in 2007 and '09.
