After being in a holding pattern for some time, Mets catcher John Buck is finally bound for paternity leave and a three-day absence. As a result, the Mets will call up catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud, who'll make his major-league debut this weekend. Manager Terry Collins confirmed the move on Friday (source: Mike Puma on Twitter).
The 24-year-old d'Arnaud, whom the Mets acquired from the Blue Jays as part of the R.A. Dickey trade this past winter, has missed significant time this season because of a broken foot. However, he's a career .286/.347/.476 hitter across parts of seven minor-league seasons, including a 1.041 OPS in limited action for Triple-A Las Vegas this year.
The 37th-overall pick of the 2007 draft, d'Arnaud entered the season as MLB.com's no. 6 overall prospect and Baseball America's no. 23 overall prospect.
As Marc Carig of the Newsday tweets, GM Sandy Alderson says d'Arnaud may stick around on the active roster even after Buck returns.
