We've known for some time that Red Sox legend David Ortiz would retire following the 2016 season. Indeed, after the Sox were eliminated by the Indians in the ALDS on Monday, Ortiz and the Fenway faithful said goodbye in emotional fashion.

On Wednesday, Ortiz took to social media to thank all the citizens of Red Sox Nation who weren't able to say goodbye in person. Here's a look at his farewell letter:

Here's the text of that letter in case you can't make it out above:

Well, wasn't the way we planned it, but I wouldn't give up this team or this season for the world.

To #RedSoxNation -- Never forget what we did. Do not be upset, instead smile, the future is bright with all these young studs!!! I may not be in uniform anymore, but these teams were never bout one guy ... It was always about the team. And I will ALWAYS be a part of Red Sox Nation.

To my family, teammates, friends and fans, Thank u for making it all worth it.

See y'all around ... #04 #07 #13

David Ortiz

Those last three numbers of course signify the three World Series that Ortiz and the Red Sox won together. Given his career bestowals and legendary postseason performances, Big Papi seems bound for the Hall of Fame. Regardless of how that process plays out, he'll forever be revered in New England and environs.
