The Marlins' Triple-A franchise in New Orleans has a new name.

After 25 seasons as the Zephyrs, the club will now be known as the ... drum roll ... New Orleans Baby Cakes. The Baby Cakes!

The team made the announced Tuesday evening on their Twitter feed:

Nothing says baseball like an angry baby with Popeye forearms.

The New Orleans franchise decided to re-brand this offseason as a way to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Baby Cakes was up against the Night Owls and Tailgators.

The Zephyrs/Baby Cakes are the fourth minor league franchise to re-brand this offseason. Here's an impromptu power ranking of their new nicknames:

  1. Binghamton Rumble Ponies (formerly the Binghamton Mets)
  2. Florida Fire Frogs (formerly the Brevard County Manatees)
  3. New Orleans Baby Cakes (formerly the New Orleans Zephyrs)
  4. Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (formerly the Jacksonville Suns)

Also, the Staten Island Yankees are currently in the process of re-branding as well. Their new nickname is up for fan voting. Here are the five nickname finalists: Bridge Trolls, Heroes, Killer Bees, Pizza Rats, and Rock Pigeons.

Minor league baseball teams: they're starting to try too hard.
