The Texas Rangers announced Wednesday that they acquired catcher Eli Whiteside off waivers from the Blue Jays.

This is Whiteside's fourth team this offseason, having previously been with the Blue Jays and Yankees via waiver claims after ending the season with the world-champion Giants.

The Rangers re-signed catcher Geovany Soto early in December but have been searching for catching depth this offseason.

Whiteside, 33, had just one hit 14 plate appearances for the Giants in 2012. He hit .224/.296/.303 with one home run in 229 plate appearances at Triple-A Fresno.

Whiteside is a career .215/.273/.335 hitter in 537 plate appearances at the major-league level over five seasons.
