The Reds have signed Miguel Olivo to a minor-league deal, the team announced. His contract includes an invite to major-league spring training.

CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reported earlier that Olivo was close to such a deal.

Olivo, 34, spent last season with the Mariners, hitting .222/.239/.381 in 323 plate appearances. He added 12 home runs, despite playing half of his games at Safeco Field, which is regarded as a pretty strong pitcher’s park.

The team’s interest in Olivo is somewhat puzzling considering it already has Ryan Hanigan and Devin Mesoraco at the position. Hanigan has typically performed well in a part-time role and Mesoraco is the club’s catcher of the future.

The Phillies, Astros and Dodgers had also shown interest in adding Olivo, according to Heyman.
